Biography

Over the past five decades Martin Carthy has been one of the most persistent and dedicated practitioners of English traditional music. He has been an essential figure in most of the significant developments in folk music during that time. To chronicle his career is to discuss the rich and diverse history of the English folk song revival since the early 1960s. His early work was an inspiration to… Read more in Amazon's Martin Carthy Store

Product Description

CD Description

Martin Carthy is probably the most important figure on the folk scene and has been for the last 40 years. He was a strong influence on Bob Dylan and Paul Simon in the early 1960s. His duo with Dave Swarbrick set the standard for folk performances in the 1960s and '70s. He was an early member of Steeleye Span. He has been a long time member of The Watersons and Waterson:Carthy. During this time he has also managed to maintain a solo career that involved recording 15 solo albums and many other albums with the various groups and playing countless thousands of gigs up and down the country and around the world. He has won many accolades and awards: an M.B.E. for services to folk music, 'Singer Of The Year' in 2002 from the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and a second nomination in 2005 for the same award. OUT OF THE CUT is a stunning album of traditional songs with Martin on guitar and furher accompaniments from John Kirkpatrick on concertina and accordian, Howard Evans on trumpet and Richard Thompson playing guitar on “Old Horse”. A great album now available at a budget price.

Carthy has long been considered the governor of English folk music and this 1982 recording is as good a place to find out why his reputation is so high. The rhythmic drone of his guitar playing and the plaintive, plainspoken style of his singing, create an uncompromising and heartfelt commitment to the traditional songs he performs. This is a million miles away from the singalong-stereotypes of the Spinners-Dubliners-Corries etc. Carthy sings and plays with passion and depth that would not disgrace a 30s Delta blues artist, such as Charley Patton. Whether harrowing (Old Horse) or humorous (Friar in the Well), there is a stark beauty in Carthy's performance that gives full justice to the songs he sings and the lives of the people and culture he celebrates. A wonderful album. The governor of English folk, indeed.

The rest of the musicians are not credited, but John Kirkpatrick appears on accordion, and, unsurprisingly, is excellent. There is also a trumpet player, whose name I don't know, but he is excellent as well. Good stuff, all round.

This is a great album by Martin Carthy from 1982. It follows a similar sound to that of its predecessor "Because its there". Once again there is mild instrument assistance from John Kirkpatrick on accordion and Howard Evans on Trumpet.
The album also includes Richard Thompson who plays guitar on one track.
This very interesting album once again shows originality from Carthy. It begins with a song collected by A.L. Lloyd. " The Devil and the feathery wife" is a story of love, while "Reynard the fox" concerns Fox hunting. Track three called The song of the lower classes is a clever piece that marries a three part hymn together with words by 19th century chartist Ernest Jones.
Then a similar marriage of words and tune takes place on "I sowed some seeds". There is also a tale about a randy Monk in "Friar in the well" Meanwhile there is a condensed narrative of King Arthur and Gwynivere in "Jack Rowland". There is more traditional pieces with "Rufford Park Poachers" that deals with an incident that took place in the 19th Century, and the final track "Old Horse" which concerns the traditional Dead Horse Ceremony. Here Carthy adds some verses to this short song.
Finally there is the track "Rigs of the time". This is a well known traditional song but here Carthy updates it in his own way with his own new words. This works well and to be fair other people did the same thing to this song. There have been different versions with a modern addition by people such as Shirley Collins, Maddy prior, Sandy Denny and more recently Bellowhead.
Kirkpatrick plays accordion on "The devil and the feathery wife" and Concertina on "I sowed the seeds", " Friar in the well" and "Old horse". Howard Evens plays Trumpet on "I sowed seeds" and "Friar in the well" He also plays Flugelhorn on "Old Horse". Richard Thompson plays guitar on "Old Horse". The album sounds traditional and the instrument addition is tastefully done. There is a little bit of double voice tracking but it is not a bad thing.
Generally speaking this is an interesting and colourful release from Martin Carthy. There is originality and vitality in yet another album from this icon of folk music. His albums are always good and this is no exception.

A wonderful album! 11 April 2008
By Sigrid
Format:Audio CD
As I gradually explore Martin Carthy's back catalogue, I am constantly amazed by the sheer quality of his music and the evident research he puts into the songs - not to mention the inventiveness at fitting songs fragments together and matching tunes to lyrics.

This CD is no different. He is joined on some of the tracks by John Kirkpatrick, Richard Thompson and the late Howard Evans (trumpet, flugelhorn).

Standout tracks? Well, 'Reynard the Fox' is a bit unusual - a lovely novelty to me, there is an early version of his updating of 'The Rigs of Time' and a fine version of 'Old Horse' - slightly spritelier than the later Brass Monkey rendition. None of the tracks are dull. Recommended!
