5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By C. FULLER TOP 50 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on 14 Aug. 2012
Format: Audio CD
Ian Ernest Gilmore "Gil" Evans (1912 - 1988) was a jazz pianist, arranger, composer and bandleader, active in the United States. He played an important role in the development of cool jazz, modal jazz, free jazz and jazz fusion, and collaborated extensively with Miles Davis.
On this new compilation by Not Now Music we have 2 albums originally released on the Impulse Records label. Peter Gamble provides the informative liner notes. Sound quality excellent.

Out of the Cool
Recorded, November 18 & 30, December 10 & 15, 1960, released February 1961.
Sessionlisting
1."La Nevada" (Gil Evans) - 15:38
2."Where Flamingos Fly" (Brooks, Courlander, Thea) - 5:14
3."Bilbao Song" (Brecht, Weill) - 4:13
4."Stratusphunk" (Russell) - 8:04
5."Sunken Treasure" (Gil Evans) - 4:16
6."Sister Sadie" (Horace Silver) - 6:57
Tracks 2, 4 and 5 recorded on November 18 & 30, 1960; the remainder on December 10 & 15, 1960.
Please note that "Sister Sadie" was not on the original album and is not included here for that reason. CD running time approx 37 minutes.
The Penguin Guide to Jazz selected this album as part of its suggested "Core Collection" calling it "Evans' masterpiece under his own name and one of the best examples of jazz orchestration since the early Ellington bands".

Into the Hot is an album released under the auspices of the Gil Evans Orchestra but actually featuring sessions by John Carisi's Orchestra and the Cecil Taylor Unit. The album was released on the Impulse! label in 1961 and features three performances by Taylor with Archie Shepp, Jimmy Lyons, Henry Grimes and Sunny Murray with Ted Curson and Roswell Rudd added on one track.

some passages sound like orchestra musicians tuning up before a performance 3 July 2014
By Synergistic One - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Recorded in 1960 and 1961, this is music for beatniks from the Beat Generation.

While some of it is quite "musical", some passages sound like orchestra musicians tuning up before a performance. CD 1 has 15 musicians and CD 2 has 23 musicians, although they did not all play on all of the tracks.

Played by well known musicians who are serious about this music, you will either like it or you won't. I give it only 3 stars. This is not a CD that you would replay very often (if ever) unless you are a beatnik artist who has misplace your bongos and are looking for some inspiration.

Definitely different.
