More About the Author

Christopher 'Kit' Williams (born April 28, 1946 in Kent, England) is an English artist, illustrator and author best known for his book Masquerade, a pictorial storybook which contains clues to the location of a golden jewelled hare created by Williams and then buried "somewhere in Britain."

Williams wrote another puzzle book with a bee theme; the puzzle was to figure out the title of the book and represent it without using the written word. This competition ran for just a year and a day and the winner was revealed on the live BBC TV chatshow Wogan.

In 1985, Kit Williams designed the Wishing Fish Clock, a centrepiece of the Regent Arcade shopping centre in Cheltenham and other clocks designed by Williams can be found in Telford and Milton Keynes Shopping Centres.

I first fell in love with Kits work, like most others at the time, upon the release of the now ledgendary treasure hunt title 'Masquerade'back in 1979.I remember feeling at that time that this artist was quirkly different.A translator of dreams.A poet of the mind.A surrealist, who combined a world of almost medieval magical nature, interwoven with a seductive thread of the niavely erotic.
I have since that time been fortunate enough through the years to have been able to collect all of Kits work now in print. With this book in particular taking a pride of place in my collection.
It really helps give an understanding and insight into the almost spiritual mind of the man.A genuine renaissance artist of these times.A completely self taught almost hermit like character.Who even today genuinely shuns the limelight.Prefering living and working reclusively,in the solitude and rural environs of his beautiful small Gloustershire cottage.
Totally captivating!
Also,as a footnote for the collector. The pale blue dustjacket image shown on Amazon. With the hare jumping over the girl,is the later hardcover reprint edtion of the book. The true first hardcover Jonathon Cape editions have the dark green dustjacket with the mermaid and the duck on them!

Kit Williams is a genius and this book is wonderful as it features his incredible art work (work done before Masquerade) and photographs of some of his work which are intricate mechanisms made from wood and jewels. This book is a must. Incredible.

Out of One Eye, but visually entrancing 30 July 2000
By Ishmael the Fiddler - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Though this work was published after his two previous popular books, "Masquerade" and "Bee on the Comb", it contains works done before. With a short biographical introduction it starts with his early artistic adventures then goes on to detailed, if eclectic, subjects, blending Realism with whimsy. The final pages showcase his ingenious and mechanically marvelous sculptures which are exquisitely painted, with detailed marquetry and metalwork. The printed page shows but a shadow of what these constructions must be like in 3D.
If you like his other work, and you can find this one, buy it!

Fantastic overview of Kit Williams' early work. Good printing and colour reproduction. The commentary on his own work is both witty and illuminating.
