5.0 out of 5 stars Room with a view 17 Nov 2008
By russell clarke TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Years ago I bought a double vinyl LP called Headz Vol.1 ;A Soundtrack of Experimental beats And Jams which is one of my favourite compilations ...well ever. The reason I mention this is that the music on that album ..primarily obscure sound collages pinioned by lugubrious beats- remind me very much of Koushiks Out My Window. This album is it's more laid back amenable cousin but the resemblance is there and I'm willing to bet the name DJ Shadow crops up in more than one review , not counting mine of course.
Koushik Ghosh describes himself as an environmental mathematician which brings to mind some wretched hippy playing the abacus but fear not for Koushik has merged a head spinning array of influences to create a dazzling meld of sounds and textures. Not only that the Canadian singer/songwriter /producer has the nous , talent whatever to create music that could be classed as easy listening or chill out but with a sonic depth that be more easily allotted to something .....well louder I suppose.
Merging titbits of soul , pop , jazz, hip hop, with even a discernible frisson of shoe gaze indie rock the songs are drenched in reverb and often given a juicy psychedelic twist . Sometimes it is genuinely weird .The title track has taut horror movie strings overlaid with keyboards akin to a stuttering cement mixer while dead monks chant on a loop . "Floating On " is an unsettling ambient drift while "Morning Comes" is ushered in on a single droning note with the layers added incrementally . Tiny sparkling chimes , a background rumble and Koushiks wispy voice filtered in and out of the mix. "Be With" has funky bass, gregarious percussion and queasy circuitous strings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, people DO still make inventive music. 4 Oct 2008
Format:Audio CD
Koushik's debut full length is a beautiful piece of work, and one for the open-minded music lover out there. The Canadian producer weaves soul samples with etherial psychadelic vocals and then chucks the whole lot over some nice chunky old school breakbeats. The result is nothing short of spectacular. If you want references, try this on for size - imagine Avalanches hooking up with Spacemen 3, travelling back to 1964, recording for the next 10 years, then coming back to the future and getting DJ Shadow to remix it round Plaid's place. It sounds everything and nothing like that. GET ON IT!

4.0 out of 5 stars sunshine through the haze....... 21 Aug 2008
By Marvin Carey - Published on Amazon.com
After hearing 2005's "Be With" I have been anxiously engaged in waiting for a full length release form Koushik. The Canada native whose music sounds like a cross between label mate Mablid (Yesterdays New Quintet, Madvillian, Quasimoto) who admittedly inspires Koushik, The Beach Boys, and My Bloody Valentine, proves with 'Out My Window" that patience truly will achieve more than force. All warped and wrapped into one dusty package, the end result is a digital form of sunshine; the music radiating a joy and sentiment of a child-like innocence. Armed with dusty break-beats and folk guitars (as well as tons of other instrument samples, including horns and rhodes) Koushik creates an ambient funky-jazzy-pop-ish world, inhabited only by a few, if any. Where Koushik's vocal capabilities may fall short a times, the musical arrangements are more than sufficient for one's full listening attention. Hazy and alluring, "Out My Window" is one grand listening experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars lush, mellow & innovative blend of rock, chillout and electronica 24 Sep 2008

"Out My Window" is complex and innovative, but not in a distracting way as some more experimental electronic albums sometimes are. It is clear that a lot of time and thought has gone into this album, and I am very impressed by the maturity of the sound given that this is, as I understand, Koushik's first full-length.

The subdued nature of most of the songs is hides their complexity, and they survive repeated listens very well. Most songs work best as background music.

I can't say I like all tracks, but here are the ones I kept from this album: "Be with", "Lying in the sun", "Nothing's the same", and "In a green space".
