Book Description

15 Sep 2005

'What better fashion accessory for a girl's home?' Vogue

In Out of Fashion Carol Ann Duffy selects the best and freshest contemporary poets and asks them in turn to select their favourite poem, from another time or culture, which looks at how we dress, or undress, how we cover up or reveal. In these vibrant poems, we are shown how clothes, fashion and jewelry are both a necessary and luxurious, a practical and sensual, a liberating or repressing, part of our lives. The result is a vital and entertaining dialogue between the two arts of poetry and fashion and between poets from the past and the present.

Review

"Out of Fashion is the right size to slip into an overcoat pocket - or to produce with a flourish. It is a fashion accessory with a difference. This is a gorgeous anthology of poems involving clothes.' Kate Kellaway, Observer 'What better fashion accessory for a girl's home?' Vogue"

This anthology contains poems by contemporary poets on the subject of clothes and fashion and a poem from the past on the same subject chosen by each of the participants.

The past choices are wide-ranging, from ancient Greek(Sappho) via Chaucer, Shakespeare and Housman to 20th century song lyrics (Buttons and Bows).

The contemporary works are equally diverse. Carol Ann Duffy's own poem, Warming her Pearls is a particular favourite. Jo Haslam's Shirt speaks of love of family and Jean Sprackland's poem Dreaming of Rubber Gloves mischievously describes a world where rubber gloves are a sexy fashion item.

The darker side of life is represented in Sean O'Briens's Cousin Coat and Dorothy Molloy's poem on a leper.

A really excellent selection that made me look for further books by several of the poets represented in it.
