Product Description

Review

The characters are expertly portrayed in few words, and the desparation of the community is palpable... a vivid and well-realised picture of a moment in history, useful for any class studying 1930s America. (www.writeaway.org.uk )

Product Description

Told in free verse in the spare and haunting voice of 14-year-old Billie Jo Kelby, Out of the Dust is a journey to the heart of a family caught in the Oklahoma dust-bowl. It is the story of Ma, who sees the idea of herself burn away with every parched day, until she herself is consumed by fire. It is the story of Bayard, her husband, who cannot comes to terms with his failure to provide for his family. But most of all, it is the story of Billie Jo who knows she must find a way to get out of the dust, even if it means leaving behind everything she has ever loved.

Wow!!! I must say, I was completely BLOWN AWAY by Hesse's Newbery winning novel. It surely deserved the honor. At first glance, I thought the book would be boring and tiring to read, seeing as the whole story was written in free verse poetry. Was I EVER wrong!!! The unusual style made the book all the better. I found myself near crying throughout most of the book. The story was about Billie Jo, a girl right in the center of the Dust Bowl. Her awful misfortunes grip you and make this novel a can't-put-it-down kind of book. I was especially moved when...oh, wait, I can't tell you. You'll just have to read it for yourself.

I loved this book! (Not only because it takes place where I live) It really captured the traumas of living in the Dust Bowl.

This is an ok book, but not deserving of all the stars it's getting. I like the style, but the story is thin, and the characters aren't very well developed. I never got attached to any of them. The author needed to provide more detail. It was just a story, nothing special.

I like the book Out of the Dust, because the poems contains
so much symbolism. Take "Roots" for example: it is one of the main poems in the book. It tells about the conflict between Billie-Jo and her father. Read more
