Book Description

Jan 1999 Apple Signature Edition
Read by Marika Mashburn
Two cassettes / 2 hours 9 mins.

When Billie Jo is just fourteen she must endure heart-wrenching ordeals that no child should have to face.  The quiet strength she displays while dealing with unspeakable loss is as surprising as it is inspiring.

Written in free verse, this award-winning story is set in the heart of the Great Depression.  It chronicles Oklahoma's staggering dust storms, and the environmental--and emotional--turmoil they leave in their path.  An unforgettable tribute to hope and inner strength.

Review

The characters are expertly portrayed in few words, and the desparation of the community is palpable... a vivid and well-realised picture of a moment in history, useful for any class studying 1930s America. (www.writeaway.org.uk ) --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

About the Author

Karen Hesse grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. From an early age she dreamed of being a professional writer and after 30 years, the dream came true. Along the way she found work as a waitress, a nanny, a librarian, an agricultural labourer, a secretary and a proofreader (plus a lot of other things). In 1998 she won the Newbery Medal for her novel Out of the Dust.

Karen says she loves writing and can't wait to get to her keyboard every morning. She loves hiking and reading too, and spending time with her family and friends. She lives in Vermont, USA.

Wow!!! I must say, I was completely BLOWN AWAY by Hesse's Newbery winning novel. It surely deserved the honor. At first glance, I thought the book would be boring and tiring to read, seeing as the whole story was written in free verse poetry. Was I EVER wrong!!! The unusual style made the book all the better. I found myself near crying throughout most of the book. The story was about Billie Jo, a girl right in the center of the Dust Bowl. Her awful misfortunes grip you and make this novel a can't-put-it-down kind of book. I was especially moved when...oh, wait, I can't tell you. You'll just have to read it for yourself.

3.0 out of 5 stars What's all the hype? 16 Jun 1999

Format:Paperback
This is an ok book, but not deserving of all the stars it's getting. I like the style, but the story is thin, and the characters aren't very well developed. I never got attached to any of them. The author needed to provide more detail. It was just a story, nothing special.
