2.0 out of 5 stars Newton, but 'dumbed down.', 29 Oct 2007
By J. Scott "whitefort" (Co. Down United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I purchased this book because I'd read Jonathan Aitken's recent biography of Newton, and wanted to read the story in Newton's own words.

Alas, that's not quite what you get in this little book. Below the title, in small print, is the crucial phrase: 'Revised and Updated for Today's Readers by Dennis R Hillman.'

What this means in practice is that the editor has, in his own words, 'retained some degree' of Newton's style. Sentences have been chopped up and shortened, 'difficult' words and phrases have been dropped, and so on.

The end result is, I suppose, a kind of translation of Newton's original words, transposed into very basic English (or to be more accurate, basic American).

To be honest, I'm not quite sure who this book is aimed at - 'Today's Readers'? Only if Today's Readers are unable to cope with anything more difficult than the level of writing found in books for young teenagers. The book has several illustrations, also of the sort that you'd expect to find in a children's book.

To sum up, If you really want to read Newton's story in his own words, I suggest you look elsewhere.

If, however, you just want a quick, easy-to-read overview of Newton's life from his own point of view, this book might be exactly what you want. And certainly it's a story well worth telling. It's such a good story that I hate only giving this book two stars. But this is not really Newton's autobiography so much as a 'dumbed-down' retelling of the story.
