Book Description

25 Oct 2012
It was the case that shocked the nation. On the evening of 20 April 2011, Tina Nash's life changed forever. After suffering months of beatings and domestic abuse at the hands of boyfriend Shane Jenkin, she was subjected to a barbaric and prolonged attack during which Jenkin beat her unconscious and gouged out both her eyes. When he was jailed in May 2012, people struggled to comprehend the scale of the violence endured by this mother of two at her home in Cornwall. In Out of the Darkness, Tina tells her full story - of what life with a violent partner is really like and how she survived 12 hours of sustained and unimaginable violence in her own home. Learning to adjust to life without her sight, Tina speaks bravely about how her children have given her the courage to keep going, and how - step by careful step - she is learning to live again. With statistics on domestic violence rising, Tina's incredible memoir of survival makes for essential reading.

Product Description

"'As Tina bravely tries to move on with her life, she hopes her story of abuse will help other trapped women' (Daily Mirror) 'It has been a year and a half since her ex-boyfriend gouged out her eyes, holding her captive throughout the night whilst her children slept. If the horror of such an act is imaginable, then her account of the 12 hours of the groping panic that followed…is almost beyond belief. "It wasn't until I got the book back from the publishers a fortnight ago, that it made sense. It was like stepping outside the box, listening to it as if it had happened to someone else."'
(Lucy Bannerman, The Times)" --Daily Mirror

About the Author

Tina Nash has lived in West Cornwall since childhood. She is now in her early thirties and is mother to two boys aged 14 and 4. She came to the nation's attention via news reports of the horrific injuries inflicted on her by her former partner, Shane Jenkin, who gouged her eyes out in a prolonged attack of domestic violence in April 2011. Her experiences make her a brilliant spokesperson for survivors of domestic violence.

I very rarely pay for books on my kindle as I find there are so many good free ones available but am so glad I downloaded this one! By far the most moving book I've read in a long time although very uncomfortable/shocking at times.
Tina is completely honest throughout helping the reader to understand how he manipulated her so that she did not believe she had any choice but to stay with him despite the intervention of the Police, Social Services and her caring family. Her love for her children could not be stronger and there is no doubt she is a great mum.
I've had Domestic Awareness Training in my job but learnt so much more from reading this book. I believe every front line professional who has any contact with victims of Domestic Abuse should read this book to fully understand a victims perspective and why they often appear to outsiders to make bad choices. Tina did not feel she had any choice and often allowed him back into her life to ensure her own safety.
Tina is an inspiration and I wish her and her children luck for the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars Compelling and deeply depressing reading 19 May 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is certainly compelling and it made gripping reading material - but I'm afraid I didn't find it in any way uplifting or life affirming. The moral - if any - seems to be that there is absolutely nothing that the police or family/friends can do to save a woman who is infatuated with a violent man to the extent Tina was with Shane. I did empathise with Tina and to some extent I understood why she made some of the decisions she made (the desire to save the 'bad boy' from himself can be compelling) but - while feeling dreadfully sorry for how she ended up - I don't like the word 'brave' used to describe someone who puts themselves into a highly risky situation for no good reason and suffers the inevitable consequences - I would rather use the words 'feisty' and 'a survivor'.

It seems sad despite years of woman's rights, that so many women still feel they are inadequate unless they have a man at their side at all times - (Tina even started looking for another man on dating sites while still bruised from the first attack from Shane). I guess that while society pays lip service to the view that women should be valued for their inner qualities, virtually everything in the popular media tells us that the only thing they are really valued for is how attractive they are to men.

I also found it disturbing the role steroids and horror films played in fuelling the violent impulses of a man who was already dangerously mentally unstable and wondered if it is time for a debate about the place these increasing repellent and violent films have in modern society?

5.0 out of 5 stars Enlightening 6 Nov 2012
A real insight into why women stay in abusive relationships, and even how to recognise if you are in one - Tina describes the subtle controlling things that can happen which the woman may think is 'normal'. Very very good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking 14 Dec 2012
By Anne
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is so harrowing my heart breaks for Tina. I have worked in a Women's Aid refuge for over ten years providing support to women and children and understand the difficulties women face when living in and leaving an abusive relationship. To anyone who wants to further their understanding of the trauma, low self esteem, fear and control women suffer and why women stay please read this book domestic abuse is so widespread everyone should have an understanding, by doing this we can hopefully change the horrific statistics of women dying or being injured at the hands of an abusive partner. Tina you are an amazing woman and your story is remarkably honest as for the abuser he is a disgusting, vile excuse for a human being who should spend the rest of his life suffering for his crimes against you and your children. Your friends, family, the police and domestic abuse unit who all provided you with support and continue to do so are remarkable. To finish i want to tell you that you are an amazing, beautiful woman who will live her life as a survivor not a victim. Please purchase this book to support Tina and raise awareness of domestic abuse.
