5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful 12 Feb 2013
By Vaughan
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Such shame not to see any comments on this. This disc is truly wonderful.

The main piece is a cantata by Julian Marshall, and is performed by The Schoolhouse 6 Ensemble vocal group. The words are from the poetry of Gertrud Kolmar, who died in Auschwitz. The poetry tells the tale of a woman walking the streets and is very evocative without being overbearing. The music too isn't heavy with sentimentality, without giving up any of it's power.

What follows is a nice piece by Gavin Bryars, and a fine rendition of the familiar Arvo Part piece, Spiegal Im Spiegal.

The whole thing is magical. As an added benefit, this really is a reference quality recording. Audiophiles should fall over themselves to grab a copy - it's really stunning.

I'm playing this over and over, without playing anything inbetween. Really marvellous. The extensive booklet includes all the words, and the majority of the singing is in English.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing! 7 Mar 2013
By Keazor
Format:Audio CD
I only discovered this by chance since the music was played in the background of a broadcast about the life and the poetry of Gertrud Kolmar. The sound of the music, its dense, melancholic color and atmosphere, the nice contrasts between the deep instruments and voices on the one and the bright, high voice of the female singer on the other (especially in "The River") immediatelly captured my attention and while still listening to the radio I started to search on the internet for a reference. Fortunately, at the end of the transmission they gave the name of the composer, Julian Marshall, and from there on it was easy to find the recording (there are also films of the performance of the German premiere during a conference on Gertrud Kolmar available on YouTube: [...]- there is also a nice interview with the composer: [...] ). To think that is the same man who - together with Kit Hain - created (under the name "Marshall Hain") the international hit "Dancing in the City" in the late 70's....
The music is simple, but at the same time poetic, it has also some archaic touches because of its simplicity, and hence the other works on the CD, by Gavin Bryars and Arvo Pärt, fit quite well.
Absolutely recommendable!
