The first thing to be said is that this is a reissue of his 1999 solo album which originally came out on Track records with one additional track "Think I'm In Love" which sounds like it sprung from the same sessions. On his solo tours of the UK Locorriere has been billed as "The sensational voice of Dr Hook". This might annoy some of the fans of the old group as Ray Sawyer (the one with the patch) certainly sung lead on many of their songs. I think it's fair to say these were the oddball and humorous songs of the group, and while some of these are rightly regarded as classics, nearly all of the melodic hits were vocals by Locorriere. From the early days of "Sylvia's Mother", "The Ballad of Lucy Jordan" and "Carry me Carrie" through to the later hits like "Sexy Eyes", "Better Love Next Time" and "When You're In Love With a Beautiful Woman" all of these hits were sung by the expressive voice of Locorriere. Many were Shel Silverstein songs, some were co-written with Locorriere and the occasional one was written solely by Dennis.
On this album Locorriere writes or co-writes 13 of the 19 tracks, 2 of the exceptions being a gospel reworking of "Sylvia's Mother" (the weakest track) and a solo acoustic live version of "Lucy Jordan" which is magical. These are his tribute to Silverstein who died in 1999. In addition to his vocals Locorriere also plays guitar, keyboards and drums on many tracks. The whole album is full of melodic classy pop songs with great hooks that get inside your head. Hard to pick out highlights as there are no filler tracks but special mention must be made of "Shine Son", written when his son went to college. Anyone with a teenage son (or daughter) will identify with this song. Other highlights are the uptempo "The Heat" and "Maybe They Won't Notice" while ballads like "Right Off The Top Of My Head" and "The Right To Walk Away" are equally as good. You could just as easily chose any of the others. I must say as well that if you get the chance to see him in one of his solo concerts with just his guitar then you should take it.
