Product Description

Tom can't sleep, so his father suggests he try counting sheep. Soon the sheep are leading him and his trusty stuffed-rabbit into a wild adventure that's anything but restful. He meets more and more creatures - mountain goats, pirates, penguins, even vampire bats and tigers. To survive, he hides or races away by car, on foot, or on skis, still counting. This is a wild and woolly counting adventure that goes all the way up to 100.

I adore this book. And so do my children - we've read it together since they were about 2, and we're still reading it at 5. It's deliciously well written and is one of those rarest of children's books that doesn't 'talk down' to children. (When Tom finds the wolves 'their teeth were sharp, their manners free, Tom thought it best to climb a tree' I quote from memory so hope that's right!) A pleasure to read aloud - no matter how many times! (And the illustrations are super too)

A little discovered gem!

Bed-time counting can be fun 18 Nov 2000
By Rob Coppola - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Out for the Count is the kind of book that wins in all respects. The prose is accessible but not over simplified. The pictures are dramatic but with a touch of humour. The story is simple;while the tension develops to a (hopefully)pleasing conclusion. It combines an interesting story with an opportunity to develop counting skills. It can be read and re-read without ever losing its special appeal. My first son,Tom,who is now nearly 12,grew up surrounded by books, from an early age. "Out for the Count",featuring his namesake,in all kinds of dicey, imaginary situations stood out as his favourite bedtime read. It helped to ignite a love of books that has led him to challenging literature of many kinds. I have no hesitation in recommending this book for children from 5 to 8/9 years.
a teaching gem 21 Aug 2011
By Christine - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
An absolute gem for teaching integrated curriculum, focusing on patterns in both reading and math.
Children love the bouncing rhythms, the rhyming words, what makes a poem, I Spy using the illustrations, and (GASP!) discovering the math.
It is so much more than a counting book! This one models grouping tens and ones (that's place value in math parlance). I use this book with K-3 children to play around with place value, equivalent expressions, expanded notation, and two-digit addition and subtraction. To culminate our project, each student writes an original verse to add to a classroom book.
