Davy McCloud is a disillusioned private investigator who has had to learn the hard way that, when it comes to women, it's usually not a good idea to follow blind impulses. Much better to play it safe and keep things simple, calm, and free of any messy complications. But when the luscious, mysterious new exercise instructor Margot Vetter shows up at the gym next door, with her endless curves on eye-popping display in neon-coloured spandex, Davy is sorely tempted to make an exception-just this once. Problem is, the background check that he runs on Margot reveals that she's hiding a few secrets-secrets of the dark and deadly kind. Margot is at the end of her rope. If you've read Shannon's other books, then you will be aware of Davy McCloud. He's the big, oozes xxx appeal, zen, martial arts expert McCloud brother. Margot is a woman on the run, scared witless by a pair of psycho brothers. She takes on a false identity and gets a job teaching gym classes next door to our resident hunk.
Needless to say, the sparks fly, suspicions about her true identity roughens the waters, and it's not long before both their lives are in danger. Sean, the youngest playboy brother and their old friend Seth (from Behind Closed Doors) play significant roles in the story, with only a cameo really from Connor (from Standing in the Shadows) as he is busy getting married. We're also re-introduced to Nick, Connor's friend who let him down, and enough of a seed has been sewn that I expect we'll see a book about him soon.
Back to our story, lives are at risk, the heat between our two leads rises and they explode into some scorching adult scenes. Shannon's adult scenes are very raw and these are no exceptions. In her previous books, her heroes were all about their ladies' pleasure, and Davy is no exception, except that he did not seem as mesmerised. Davy pushes Margot to her raw, vulnerable self but is afraid to let his guard down. As the oldest brother who found himself as a single parent to three boys, he's had to always be in control. So, we have the trust issue and some resentment from Margot. This leads to Margot fleeing from Davy, endangering both their lives.
They manage to work through their issues and the whole plot comes to a bullet-flying, action-packed, drama-filled resolution that is a little too overdone to be realistic.
I enjoyed this book very much, but I only gave it 4 stars as it lacked some of the intensity of her previous books and the plot was a little too out-there to be plausible. Still, I have every intention of re-reading it and holding on to it.

I love the way Shannon writes. The first book of her's I read was behind closed doors. I usually read mills and boon romances which are pretty tame, so I've gotten used to this as standard. However Shannon describes the chemistry and sex with such detail that it's a welcome relief from all those authors who write as if their work is being censored. Shannon's stories always involve some sort of international baddie whose intention is to take over the world and that is no different here.
As explained by a previous reviewer, the title comes from Davey's (the male lead) need to control himself and surroundings. He feels out of control around Margot and tries to control her with his size and sheer force of will. He's not able to do it. Because Margot is skittish he doesn't want to be too controlling because she pushes him away when he does. In the end the book ends with a big fight scene and the hero wins the day (as to be expected)
The characters are good, but the intensity in the bedroom was a little lack lustre, but I'm still a fan.
