5.0 out of 5 stars Distilling an English childhood 28 Jan 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am buying this book again, to take to a friend's 3-year old in America: I wanted something atmospheric, typically English, but with a real feel of childhood, and this is it. It's one of the favourites from when my own daughter was the same age and this ranked up there alongside The Tiger who Came to Tea, Mog, and Maisie Middleton. Some books are just meant to be be read aloud and pored over together, and this is one of them. The pictures are gorgeous - especially the one of all the back gardens backing onto one another: we spent hours playing 'and now can you find...?' on that page. The poems are simple but lyrical - a joy to read aloud, and a wonderful introduction to non-prose for toddlers. This book is a classic and there's far more to it than a bunch of poems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Nostalgia 1 Feb 2008
By Mrs. K. A. Wheatley TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
I used to read Shirley Hughes' books when I was a child and loved the intricate details in the drawing. She has an amazing knack for making the real world of a child come to life. I thought they would be dated now, because this is not the childhood most people have any more, but my children love them just the same.
This book takes you on a journey through the year in simple, evocative poems and wonderful illustrations. My kids love to find 'themselves' in the pictures and always ask me which one I am. They particularly love the seaside and bonfire night pictures, and the poem about the fire being like a dangerous dragon. It's a wonderful book and makes me nostalgic for my own childhood, when this was all real to me.
