Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Lucky Jim are a Brighton-based duo, comprising Edinburgh-born Gordon Graham and native Brightonian Ben Townsend. Our Troubles End Tonight, their first album, was written, performed and produced by the pair. On the strength of this remarkable early showing, it must be fervently hoped that Graham and Townsend never fall out over a borrowed guitar lead--not until they've produced a few more albums of this high standard. It would be fair to assume that when Graham and Townsend met, they discovered a shared appreciation for Bob Dylan's "Blood on the Tracks", The Waterboys' "Fisherman's Blues", the works of Tindersticks and, especially, Lee Hazlewood. From these influences, Lucky Jim have alchemised a fine collection of songs, elegantly played and sung, and produced to sound just as cracked and faulty as the hearts of their narrators: the knelling waltz "Leah" is a particular highlight. Mournful, wry and bleakly funny, Our Troubles End Tonight is a tremendous debut. --Andrew Mueller

5.0 out of 5 stars Lucky Jim (magic!!!), 31 May 2004
Okay so I'm no music reviewer, and I don't have the vocabulary to write a great review, but i can advise you to go out and buy this album.

I buy a lot of music, and i can easily say this is best album I have bought in many years. Ahhh! Its beautiful. Leonard Cohen, Air, Tindersticks influences are there.

If your a sucker for love and tender lyrics - then buy it. I also recently discovered that the album was recorded using old fashioned equipment, and when its played loud enough all the hissing and crackling can be heard, which just makes even more special.

The album is jammed in my cd player, stuck on repeat - its a hard life!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album, 25 Jan 2006

I've been listening to this album now for a good year and a half and if possible i love it more now than ever! I really do recommend this album to anyone and everyone - the voice, lyrics and music are all unbelievably excellent and each song manages to flow into the next while not sounding samey. (Try the singles too, all the extra tracks are well worth having). Hopefully the next album will be out soon and i expect great things!

Gordon Grahame is the Lucky Jim who this album is accredited to. He wrote all the songs and along with producer Ben Townsend played all the instruments. He's also something of a chameleon. On some songs he sings with a rich crooning quality, yet on "You're Lovely to me" he sounds like a young Dylan while on "Westwards were headed" there's a hint of Lee Hazelwood. There is one consistent defining factor to all the songs on Our Troubles End Tonight. It's relentlessly superb. I've never heard of Grahame until now. Looks like I've missed out.
This album will be lumped in with the current glut of alt-country bands and while there is good reason for that in the swinging strummed chords and spasms of Hammond organ, musically this is far too diverse, rich and well , soulful an offering for such knee jerk categorisation. On "The Honeymooners", "You're Lovely to me", "Lesbia", "My Soul is on Fire" and "Endless Night" brooding strings hang threateningly in the background like mist rolling inexorably onto a coastline. On the title track a plangent trumpet plays in the background, so far in the background it sounds like it was outside the studio, yet this renders it even more impelling. A crisp Spanish guitar decorates "Westwards were Heading" a long with some nifty finger clicking. Heather Banks provides ultra-cool vocals on "The Honeymooners".
I've checked out the stuff from his former band The Lost Soul Boys on Amazon and they are all currently unavailable which is a bit of a blow. Someone in record company land do the decent thing ,and re-issue them all on C.D. with some bonus tracks if its not too much trouble. You,d be doing me ,and lots of others a great service for if they are anywhere near as good as "Our Troubles end Tonight" they are essential listening.
