This is about the tenth book I have read of Anna Jacobs and I never get fed up of her writing. This book is absolutely brilliant. It is about one of the Kershaw sisters, Mary-Ann. who doesn't yet know she's a Kershaw. She is abused by her Stepfather at 15 and becomes pregnant, she then is sent to a house in the country as were many women years ago. It tells you about her struggles to give up her child, the friends she meets along the way and is altogether a very enjoyable book, that I couldn't put down. Anna Jacobs is a brilliant novalist and I truly enjoy reading her work.

moving and I couldn't stop listening 30 Jun 2008
By Barbara Lane - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I listened to this on audio. Wow what a gripping fast pace story.

What a sad moving beginning Mary ann's mother being pregnant but when she tells the father of the child, he had already found someone else and she also was pregnant. He has chosen to marry the other lady because she had a nicer personality and not as nasty like her. So she had to move towns and say that she was married and the father had been killed in the war. Mary ann is the new child brought up by an unloving mother who rules with an iron fist in a boarding house. Marys ann mother remarries to a (sleaze bag) con man who only wanted her for her money. "sign the house and everything into my name or I won't feel like the real man of the house" Mary ann has to start fighting him off with his advances to her.

Mary Ann has nowhere to go and her mother never believes anything she says. Mary Ann starts walking around with a hat pin in her apron for protection to stab him if he comes near her. Drastic circumstances.

the book is so fast moving I couldn't get out of the car. which more of Anna Jacobs stories were on audio I would listen them all.
