Product Description

Product Description

Florida: a land of dazzling white sands, sizzling sun... and utterly incompetent British criminals.

Like the woman who hijacked a helicopter to bust her husband out of Death Row, the gap year student who robbed a bank and tried to escape on a kid's bike and the unlucky Londoner who kidnapped the wrong guy and wound up serving 1,285 years in jail.

As British consul in our nation’s favourite holiday hotspot, Hugh Hunter has seen them all – murderers, small-time conmen and big-time drug dealers (plus ordinary families whose dream vacations turned to nightmares).

Our Man in Orlando is his astonishing true story of a decade spent dealing with clueless, witless and hopeless Brits abroad.

Hugh Hunter was a guest on the Victoria Derbyshire show on Five Live and Excess Baggage on Radio 4.
Our Man in Orlando was serialised in The Times and The Week magazine and the book is about to be turned into a major new television drama.

'Vivid and enjoyable' - Christopher Meyer, author of DC Confidential

5.0 out of 5 stars A Star from Orlando 27 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback
This book is brilliant, really brilliant. Hunter tells these incredible stories not only with; wit and candour but also with an abundance of humility, a humility that he appeared to use in his work. I truly admired the objectiveness and professionalism and indeed pride he took in his role as consular.

Although many of the stories made me smile or even laugh out loud there were also some that were very sad and one or two that made me cry "There but for the grace of God go I" I trust other readers will not only sympathise but at times empathise with some of the poor souls Hunter reports on. How many of us have been `temporally insane', touched by madness or `soufflé a folie'? Especially when in the `honeymoon period' of a relationship?I am so pleased I was not in Florida when I had my own moments !

Another thought I had was that I am very happy I live in the UK and think that our judicial system is second to none. I think that to be `wrongly' accused of a crime in the U.S. must be as daunting and difficult to remedy as being charged in Saudi or China. The U.S.A. or Florida appears a truly brutal place to be in if you fall on the wrong side of the law.

I can not recommend this book enough. Whether you read cover to cover, or take on holiday or use on the W.C. you will love it, well written and a great story or stories. I for one can not wait until this is made in to a film and am exercising my brain trying to work out who should play Hunter in the film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazingly interesting with a lot of humor 27 Aug 2010
By Joymar
Format:Paperback
I was surprised to find out how different the UK and USA are regarding punishment for various crimes. I am Canadian and we relate to both countries.
Having worked for a government I know how decisions from the top often do not make sense to those carrying out the business, and Mr. Hunter has described this well, especially in regard to how difficult it is to be the front person sometimes.
His sense of humor and ability to tie everything together makes this a book that is hard to put down until it is finished! When is the next one coming??

5.0 out of 5 stars Top drawer 22 Aug 2010
By Mikey L
Format:Paperback
If you read one book this year make sure its this. If you read two books you could do a lot worse than read this twice. It will make you laugh & cry - both hysterically & want to give copies to all everyone you know. Brilliant, and I should know
