This film exceeded our expectations, which were moderately low. Forget the the package artwork on this DVD, the film is a little known gem. I've been watching romantic Robin Hood type action melodramas since the '50s but have no memory of having seen this on TV or the cinema. If you have a soft spot for Victor McLaglen then its worth viewing for his role alone; recorded, as it is, so late in his career. This story fulfils all the requirements of the genre in playfully evoking history and reflecting on the nature of : love, honour, loyalty, treachery, comradeship, community and tyranny.

Look out for Rex Reason, of This Island Earth, as a young Harold. Also, surpassing Flynn's Robin and the Ivanhoe of 1952, is an amazing archery trick shot which adds realism to the familiar arrow to the breast of a mail-clad Nrman herald as he completes his announcement of a doubling of taxes on the 'luckless Saxons'.

To top it off, if you are a Maureen O'Hara fan, or just an 'ornry' femimist then here she is in her glory leading the cast and the plot as the dauntless, wise, popular heroine who inspires the finest of values in the hearts of men despite their own clumsiness fecklessness and vanity.
Look out for Clint Eastwood as one of the Saxons !

A very good British comedy/thriller with a great cast including Alec Guiness, Ralph Richardson, Noel Coward and Burl Ives, from the novel by Graham Greene. The idea of 'our spy' who was nothing more than a vacuum cleaner salesman with his made up 'spy ring' actually had a real life variation in World War 2 with our fake spy, 'Garbo'.

The '2nd feature', 'Lady Godiva', (on the sleeve), 'Lady Godiva of Coventry' on the film itself, was an interesting old curio for three reasons; 1, Lady G being played by Maureen O'Hara; 2, Old Coventry being re-constructed somewhere in America, and 3, a very short speaking part for a very young Clint Eastwood, cast as. 'First Saxon'! See if you can spot him as first bowman.

All in all, a very good buy. Gordon Thomas, of Coventry.
