Book Description

Eric Chen is ready to make a name for himself. American-born Chinese (ABC) and armed with a high-powered banking job, he is destined for success and riches in the world's next superpower.

But the New China is rapidly changing, its billion-plus people ambitious, hungry and on the move. Determined to win a take-over deal that sees him shuttle between Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong and New York, Eric encounters those also profiting from the world's most promising nation: the playboy son of a Hong Kong tycoon, a hedonistic boss, and another ABC desiring to belong. In the New China, cultural assimilation and confusion, along with temptation and seduction, abound- and Eric could lose himself not to mention those he loves most.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Real China 20 Jan. 2014
Format:Paperback
ABC means American-born Chinese. The term is replete with sociological subtext, ranging from extreme pejorative to high conceit. ABCs might be Americans trying to milk China or Chinese trying to fleece America, both, neither or something else entirely. Nonetheless, the ABC demographic represents a crucial strand of the relationship between China and `the West'. Crucially, they are represented by power and money crazed upwardly mobile preppies, working in China. The Chinese business community is characterized by snobbery, backbiting and prejudice with numerous internal conflicts: new/old money, politics/business, mainland/Hong Kong, foreign educated/homegrown, tall/short. When you throw the ABCs into the mix, who by definition know next to nothing about the `real China', things can get very complicated. This bubbling cauldron of money, sex and misunderstanding is the setting for OUR MAN IN CHINA.

The man is question is Eric. Eric is at Goldberg Brothers, the investment bank `doing mergers and acquisitions, mainly for the technology sector'. He is the primest of prime examples of an ABC, he speaks Chinese in a British `schoolboy French' style, and doesn't read it at all. On the basis of numerous chastisements from his grandmother and fireworks in February he believes himself to by a pan-cultural man who `understands' China. Woe betide him! His girlfriend, Joanna, also ABC is exceptional in that she speaks, reads and writes excellent Chinese. Eric is wildly keen to make his fortune among the great and good of the new China; Joanna likes America.

Enter a cast of supermodels, youthful billionaires, bitter gangsters; and force them to mingle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very well written novel 1 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is intelligently written and an enjoyable read. It gives an insight into the way the world works in Asia and how people interact in that environment. Although life is similar in all the major cities in the world it is interesting to see how each one has a slightly different 'flavour'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyed this one 31 Aug. 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I was introduced to this book in an unusual way. While working for a short while in Taiwan, I met the author's father who told me about his daughter''s first book. We had been talking about TBCs and ABCs and so he mentioned that the main characters in 'Our Man in China' were ABCs (American Born Chinese). It provides an interesting insight into life in Asia and weaves in some corporate intrigue with the main characters romantic compromises. A thoroughly enjoyable book and one that I think would also make a great book club read. Looking forward to Ming Liu's second novel.
