Product Description

The much-loved tale of a northern lad during the Second World WarIt was on a Sunday night in 1928 that Billy Hopkins made his first appearance. Billy’s tenement home on the outskirts of Manchester would be considered a slum today, but he lived there happily with his large Catholic family, hatching money-making schemes with his many friends. When war came, and the Luftwaffe dominated the night sky, Billy was evacuated to Blackpool. There he lived on a starvation diet while his own rations went to feed his landlady’s children – ‘I might as well be in Strangeways!’ But even the cruel blows that were to be dealt to the family on his return to Manchester would not destroy Billy’s fighting spirit – or his sense of humour.

Synopsis

Born in 1928, Billy Hopkins lived happily on the outskirts of Manchester with his large Catholic family, hatching money-making schemes with his friends. When war came Billy was evacuated to Blackpool, to a landlady who gave Billy's rations to her own children, while Billy lived on a starvation diet. Here he enjoyed his first romance.

Ok so i might be a tad bias here as i am a Lancashire Lass myself and from Salford, Manchester but i can safely say this is the best book i have read in many many years. I first saw the book in a shop at Manchester Airport whilst seeing my only sister (who i call 'Our Kid') off home to Florida USA and i thought then that the book seemed Appropriate. Little did i know that a month later i would be recommending it to EVERYONE i know. This is the only book on here i have ever reviewed and i had such a roller coaster ride of emotians reading it that i just have to tell you.... READ IT... you will not regret it.
I of course had to read the follow up which i would only give a 4* rather than this 5* but i will be buying Kates Story in the morning and hopefully it will be just as good as 'Our Kid'.
Billy Hopkins, you are outstanding in your work and i can only imagine what kind of happy life you have now....fun and happiness i bet.

My father in law gave me the book to read and I was dubious as it isn't the sort of book I'd normally go for. I was pleasantly suprised as the book was one of the most moving stories I have ever read. It makes you realise how difficult like was for children growing up before and after the war and how much I, and my generation (I'm 25) take for granted. I'll never laugh at my grandmother again when she tells me how easy I've had it - coz I have. I'd highly recommend it to anyone, whatever their age!!

'Our Kid' is a captivating family story; rather than an autobiography, about a young Lancashire lad growing up in pre-war, and war-time Britain. Billy Hopkins is a masterful storyteller who draws you into his world of a working class household coping, and surviving, the ups and downs of life. The reader shares the good times and bad times feeling part of the tale, rather than as an impartial observer. I admit that as a Londoner born and bred, I did wonder what an earth I would find of interest about a family living 'up North'. Having read this book voraciously I feel suitably chastened - it's gripping. The rich detail, and revealing insights made me hungry to learn more and more about our hero. Billy Hopkins is a very real person in every sense - a fascinating story, and a thoroughly satisfying read.

An enjoyable read, but nothing exceptional
I enjoyed 'Our Kid' by Billy Hopkins, but could not help comparing it unfavourably with 'The Road To Nab End' by William Woodruff which I had read some months earlier. Read more
