'Our Kid' is a captivating family story; rather than an autobiography, about a young Lancashire lad growing up in pre-war, and war-time Britain. Billy Hopkins is a masterful storyteller who draws you into his world of a working class household coping, and surviving, the ups and downs of life. The reader shares the good times and bad times feeling part of the tale, rather than as an impartial observer. I admit that as a Londoner born and bred, I did wonder what an earth I would find of interest about a family living 'up North'. Having read this book voraciously I feel suitably chastened - it's gripping. The rich detail, and revealing insights made me hungry to learn more and more about our hero. Billy Hopkins is a very real person in every sense - a fascinating story, and a thoroughly satisfying read.
