Anybody who says they don’t like Madness is very probably lying. Madness are, quite simply, a bona fide national treasure; a band who inspire such goodwill and bonhomie that we are lucky to be graced with their continuing presence on Britain’s music scene. Although Our House is yet another hits-milking compilation from a band who've become as cherishable a British institution as the doorstep pint, this one is a little different. In a manner of speaking, the very best (and often most memorable) Madness songs were always those jovially slapstick, micro soap-operettas about school larks, embarrassing teenage condom procurement scenarios and buying your first set of (wholly unreliable) wheels. Even their "darker" themed thoughts on depression ("Grey Day"), stress-induced heart attacks ("Cardiac Arrest") and--how old fashioned it seems now--pregnancy out of wedlock ("Embarrasment") were filmic vignettes waiting for theatrical props to happen (whilst also suggesting that Madness contained many a frustrated social worker and GP within their ranks). Lo and behold, a Madness-based stage musical: Our House (a London love story in which a boy meets...oh, don't let us spoil it for you), featuring 19 of the old hits (all here, these are not re-workings bar a spruced up remix of "It Must Be Love") plus a pair of adequate new songs "Simple Equation" and "Sarah's Song", two purposely composed numbers which ought to provide the impetus for the avid Madness collector (always wears a pork pie hat in bed, owns a dog called "Suggs") to shell out the readies yet again. However, if it's strictly all the hits you're after, then, as it were, "don't touch that, touch this", 1998's Heavy Heavy Hits has them all (except 1999's comeback "Lovestruck") and is probably a better bricks-and-mortar investment than Our House. --Kevin Maidment

4.0 out of 5 stars Top Album From 80's Greats 24 April 2003
Format:Audio CD
Madness are one of the best and most fun bands this country has produced and this new compilation showcases just that. All the classics are here and also a new mix of 'It Must Be Love'. 'Simple Equation' and 'Sarah's Song' are both taken from the musical 'Our House' and sound great. The 21 quality tracks make it definitely worth its money!

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely not an "Embarrassment" 17 Dec 2002
By N. Dodd VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
I was lucky enough to see the new Madness musical, "Our House" in its preview week. A Red Arrows-esque fly-past of the cast on school desks, singing along to Baggy Trousers - well, it really does have to be seen to be appreciated! I was very impressed, and left with a renewed passion for the music. I rushed to buy the accompanying CD as soon as it was released.
Esssentially, yes, this is yet another "Greatest Hits" album, but the two new songs are worthy additions to the catalogue. "A Simple Equation" is fast becoming a favourite of mine. In the musical, this song is sung by "Dad" - played by Ian Reddington (Tricky Dicky from Eastenders). It's a catchy tune highlighting the "simple equation" that for there to be good in the world, bad has to exist - very much a theme of the Sliding Doors style musical. Great lyrics and undeniably Madness.
Overall, this is a highly recommended album to accompany a highly recommended musical. I look forward to a cast album, and hope there's one in the pipeline.

5.0 out of 5 stars Complete Madness!! 28 Oct 2002
Format:Audio CD
This latest release by Madness hits two birds with one stone; it is the soundtrack of the new musical 'Our House' and a collection of Madness's finest hits to date.
All of the classics are there, including 'House of Fun', 'Baggy Trousers' and 'Our House', and they all sound as fantastic and fresh as they did first time round. All 21 tracks showcase why Madness are one of the best loved UK bands and the album includes two new songs, 'Simple Equation' and 'Sarah's Song' as well as a new mix of the classic 'It Must Be Love' which were created especially for the music.
This is one collection of hits you can't do without! Madness are quite simply fantastic!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best singles band of the 80s - no contest! 4 Jun 2009
Format:Audio CD
Our House was released in 2002 to coincide with a West End musical of the same name for which Madness were associate producers. It contains a handful of new songs which are perfectly OK interspersed with most of their classic singles from the 80s which is what we really want to hear...

Madness were undoubtedly the best singles band of the 80s with a nearly flawless run of 21 Top 20 singles to rival those by The Kinks and The Beatles from the 60s. They started as a ska band though soon developed their sound into classy, quintessentially English pop, much like an 80s version of Ray Davies' mob. They also of course became one of the first bands to embrace the new market for videos with a series of promos so brilliant and witty that the watcher was at risk of not appreciating the quality of the musical away from the visuals.

Unlike many acts from the 80s, Madness' music has dated very well. This is largely due to them using classic instruments and sounds rather than the fashionable synths of the time which have, of course, dated rather badly. The rich though not overcooked arrangements are excellent and, though long-time producers Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley take a lot of credit, most of the praise should be given to the magnificent seven nutty men themselves. Their playing is exemplary and, though there is not a weak link in the band, special praise should be given to pianist Mike Barson and guitarist Chris Foreman who usually provides a memorable motif in every song. There are catchy hooklines and melodies-a-plenty with all seven members writing or co-writing in various combinations.

On to the songs themselves, upbeat highlights for me include Night Boat To Cairo, Return Of The Los Palmas 7 and Our House itself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Come into the house... 2 Nov 2002
Format:Audio CD
Enjoy the pleasures that the House of Madness has to offer - from 'Night Boat to Cairo' (the BEST ska song ever written!) thru their first No. 1, 'House of Fun' up to the later 'Michael Caine' (who else would have got away with it?)
Simply a great collection of foot-tappin, pork-pie wearing, piano-jangling hits from the Nutty Boys. Why only four stars then you may ask? The only let down about this album is the fact that their first hit, 'The Prince' is missing, and unforgivably, 'One Step Beyond' is missing!!! Wot no 'Heavy, heavy monster sound'??? Afraid not...
Anyway, there's plenty here to keep you going, and if you're 5 or 50, don't feel that you're an 'Embarrassment' - it's a 'Simple Equation' - just let your feet do the talking in the House of Fun!
