Product Description

Product Description
Based on the inspirational Cannonball Run movies of the 80s, the Gumball rallies have become synonymous with thrills 'n' spills. Alternative between the USA and Europe, with different routes each year, they have attracted the great and the good and anyone mad enough to risk their car in the hair-raising 3,000-mile race. In May 2004, journalist Clement Wilson and ex-champion jockey Richard Dunwoody joined forces to take a trusty Volvo estate car along the route in an attempt to outgun the Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Porsches of their fellow racers. Fuelled by Richard's competitive instincts to be the first across the finishing line and the last man standing at the bar, they dashed down the autoroute, through Spain and into the desert of Morocco, mixing pain and pleasure, as prangs and parties took them from one adventure to another. In this hilarious account they explain why rallying has become so enticing, what it's like to hobnob with the King of Morocco, dance with celebrities in Marrakech, get arrested in Spain and why burning rubber has never smelt so good!

About the Author
Clement Wilson is currently the Senior Features Writer & Motoring Correspondent for The European Magazine. He is a former used-car dealer and veteran of many classic rallies. Richard Dunwoody is a former National Hunt jockey and rode 1,699 winnters in Britain, becoming Champion Jockey three times. He was awarded the MBE in 1993. he has written columns for The Daily Telegraph.

5.0 out of 5 stars Encapsulating read on the Gumball Rally, 11 Jun 2005
Being an eccentric gumball fan, I strive for any information I can get about the happenings and shenanigans that happen along the 3000 mile route.
So I heared some guys had done it in a Volvo?! Well...... my experience of Volvo's was as a young boy, sat in the back of my dads Volvo (of course with the token Labrador in the boot) being overtaken by anything that had the kinetic energy of my pet snail. This cemented my suspicions that Volvo's were 'rubbish'.
So this guy had not only 'attempted' the gumball rally in one, but was going to write a book about it?? So my initial thoughts were that it would be badly written (seeing though it was to be written by a 'gumballer') and extremely boring (because these gumballers were in a 'volvo').
Could I of been any more wrong???
This has been a fabulous read! I have read many motoring, travelling, comedy books, but none that combine all three of these elements into such an encapsulating reading experience. My previous favourite writer in this genre 'was' Jeremy Clarkson. (Hence the 'was').
Clement explains the gumball and the cars in such a clear and understanding manner that now even my girlfriend can understand all the car anecdotes.
This book isn't just for die-hard gumball fans, and exotic car enthusiasts, it is for anyone that enjoys an easy to read good book, that is brutally honest (as Vicki Butler Henderson would know!) Clement's honesty is inspiring in this book and will keep a smile on your face from the first to the last page. My girlfriend can vouch for me on that one, as she and my dad have read it also!
And I can promise you that after reading it... you will want to buy a Volvo. Don't believe me?? Well read it then!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly entertaining, 16 May 2005
By Colin (London, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This is a hugely engaging read filled with amusing anecdotes and sharp observation, all set to the page-turning background of the Gumball rally. It is worth reading alone to get a view of life on the hedonistic riot of the Gumball - but the book is much more than that. Wilson is clearly a man with opinions and the book has some very funny and beautifully observed "soapbox moments". Also to be savoured is the rivarly between Wilson and Dunwoody - clearly best of friends but not beyond dastardly cunning when there are women at stake. All in all I loved this book for its wit and humour - it's fun and I couldn't recommend it more.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Volvo doing the Gumball rally?!, 4 Jun 2009
This book is a truly hilarious account of Clement Wilson and Richard Dunwoody (you know, the jockey) attempting the Gumball Rally in, of all things, a Volvo! When I first saw the book, I thought that it could either be extremely funny or extremely dull. I was pleasantly surprised then, when I found myself laughing out loud in public places whilst reading. I advise everyyone to read this whilst sat in a park and keep an eye out for the odd looks that you will receive when you break down with laughter!

Having read The Driver by Alex Roy, shortly before this book, it was great fun to see the Gumball from another point of view. Also, some of the "regulars" pop up in both books.

It has been a long time since I read a book in one day but I succesfully managed it with this one, most of the time unable to put it down (not a good thing to read if you have to cross busy main roads) and I feel that this says a lot about Wilson's writing style and wit. The book could so easily have been a dry, dull tale of how they competed but it is done with such humour that it should be applauded. You really do feel as if you are on the journey with the guys as they trek across continents.

This is a must read for anybody who has even a mild interest in cars, travel, Richard Dunwoody or just fancies a really excellent read that have them in tears from laughing.

Also, once you have read this, read The Driver by Alex Roy, another top class book!
