Product Description

What would you do if your own father refused to meet you? Growing up in Accrington with only an agoraphobic mother and Bert next door for company, Lily Appleyard spent her childhood hoping that one day her absent father would show up and whisk her off to a better life. He never did. Now nineteen and at college in Leeds, she stills harbours a fantasy he'll show up one day. Maybe he's busy saving the whale in the Antarctic, or searching for a cure for cancer in the Brazilian Rainforest. Her best friend Jo has much lower expectations of men. That's because her father waited until she was fourteen before leaving with his teenage, pregnant girlfriend. When Lily's mother dies and Lily finds her father alive and well but with no intention of ever meeting her, she has a decision to make. Should she forget about him? Or does she have a right to know her own father? Doesn't he owe her at least one meeting? Jo's had enough of talking about a revolution. She thinks it's time for action. Fuelled by vodka and a burning need for revenge, Lily realises she's got nothing left to lose.

What a brilliant story that has the reader laughing out loud, shedding a tear and cringing with embarrassment. This is a really good read with a very true to life, but suprising ending.

I loved this book! All the characters are great - especially Lily (and her sister is fab too) - I was rooting for her from page one. The twists and turns in the plot literally stopped me putting the book down and in places I was laughing out loud. If you buy one book this week - you won't regret making it this one! Can't wait for this writer's next book...

This is the story of a rejected daughter getting her own back on her absent father. Set in the late 1980s, student Lily is furious when the father she never knew rejects her attempts at contact. Her bid for revenge does not go the way she expects, however. Vodka-fuelled Lily and best friend Jo really hooked me into the story, and like all the characters in this great first novel were soon showing unexpected sides to their personalities, as the story developed into a compelling page-turner.

One of the great things about this book is the way the author shows you different perspectives to the same situation, and makes you continually rethink the characters and their behaviour. All of the characters showed a more sympathetic side as the story went on, revealing new dimensions on a situation that first seemed clear-cut - a father who abandoned his wife and baby. What started as quite a dark story became almost "feel-good" by the second half of the book - but the author had yet more tricks up her sleeve...

This is a great title for book groups as not only is it exciting and compelling but it provides lots of food for discussion: family dynamics, parents' and childrens' rights, feminism, sibling relationships... Highly recommended.
