Format:Mass Market Paperback
Very disappointed, but maybe that's because I am so used to The Womens Room and Her Mothers Daughter, (both of which are dog eared favourites and highly recommended.) It was obvious where this book was leading, and it doesn't challenge in the way her other books do. Big bad father, rival daughters. Without giving away too much of the plot, it would have been far more challenging if the father had been a "nice guy", so that his secret would be more shocking - after all, this kind of thing isn't restricted to the nasty bad monster-under-the-bed type of person. What happened Marilyn? You used to shock me, make me laugh, make me cry and make me want to scream at you. I could barely finish this I was so bored.

I've read everything by Marilyn French but Our Father is the book I've re-read the most times. The descriptions of the sisters and their changing attitudes towards one another are a delight. Isn't it great to have a good novel go on and on?

One of French's less well known works, but in my opinion her very best! As usual, she manages to intertwine a multitude of different characters - and their stories and developments - in one novel. The 'internal monologue' she employs to alternate between different narrators seems a confusing technique in the beginning, but it adds a fascinating, 'theatrical' angle to a plot that contains characteristics of ancient tragedy in itself. Probably it is because the characters constantly interrupt the others' stream of thoughts that you simply cannot stop reading; you just 'have to' know how this will continue. A political book and a mind-opening experience!
