Eye opening 12 April 2010
Format:Paperback
Nock makes a very good point that todays 'state-serf' citizen no more questions the state than a fifteenth century man would question the church and when change is sought, the thinking only extends to a different type of state as in bygone days people thought of a different church. The question of the legitimacy of the state is never raised.

This is a very, very good book and well worth reading

For a fictional account of this theory of economics and politics, you may want to try Single Acts of Tyranny

This gentleman has forever opened my eyes to the common denominator that exposes the state for what it is. Namely, the engine that allows the machine of plunder to operate with remarkable efficiency.
Anyone who dares to take the chance of contemplating Mr. Nock's revisionist history lesson will indeed reexamine the very nature of government.

Life changing 22 Dec 2008

BEWARE - it's stunning in content.

There are few books, which mark, define and change your perspectives as totally as this little book, in its first two chapters.

Social Power v State Power.

The State has no money of it's own, it's only source of money, is that which we give it as taxpayers. Likewise it has no power, only that which we allow it. For every inch the state takes in power, there is an equal reduction in social power, the state always hastens to convert social power to state power.

During our times, of Police State, Database State and surveillance society, this speaks to us, in a way, that previous generations could not comprehend.

Fastly paced, it punches ideas at you, so easily stated that you understand the concepts on the first reading.
