Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

Like Moloko, Anglo-American trio Red Snapper have been coming at dance music side-on since they formed in 1993, splicing soundtrack-influenced instrumentals to a distinctive vibrating double bass sound then piling in dense hip-hop beats and tons of atmosphere--like Mingus kidnapped by Public Enemy. Their last album, 1998's Making Bones, contained the criminally overlooked gem "Image Of You" and while there is nothing that scales as high here (you don't write too many songs like that frankly) it still contains more invention and musical wit than a rackful of Ibiza compilations. From the leftfield funk of the David Essex-sampling "Some Kind Of Kink" (featuring junglist MC Det) to the pornographic bump and grind of "The Rough And The Quick" it is an album of dark, dangerous moods, explosive climaxes and bottomless troughs--none deeper, though, than the closer "They're Hanging Me Tonight". Red Snapper certainly put you through it. --Mike Pattenden

5.0 out of 5 stars Double Plus Good 8 Nov 2000
Format:Audio CD
The last time I heard Red Snapper, it was on "Later...". They were churning out a mix of Jazz, Live Hip-Hop and Drum n Bass. All very nice, but a little polite. This isn't. Evil basslines (which by turn growl and pulse), moody strings, funky beats, Monty Norman guitars and messed up vocals. Menacing like Portishead but funkier and louder. Each track sounds different. All good though.

I suppose the closest thing to this is "The Herbaliser" in full-on funk workout mode (Goldrush etc.), but this has more electronics and sampling. If any of this sounds remotely appealing, buy this CD soonest or sooner.

5.0 out of 5 stars So good you'll want to own it on vinyl 3 Nov 2000
Format:Audio CD
"Our Aim is to Satisfy" is a darker, moodier album than the previous 'Jazz-dance' album, Making Bones. It features more in the way of synths and orchestral sequences than the the trumpets and bouncy sounds of their previous album. There's no one track that stands out as well as "Image of you" from Making Bones but there are more pieces of a higher and consistent standard throughout. 'Some Kind of Kink' is a true classic, a very bizarre meld of sounds and drumming and is no wonder it's the choice for their first single. The final 3 tracks are slower, moodier and more instrumental than the more soul inspired middle part. "They're Hanging me tonight" being a haunting end to a great album. So buy a copy on CD, then buy another copy on Vinyl because you should have it on display somewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moody funksters 18 Feb 2002
Format:Audio CD
This was the first Snapper album I have purchased and since then I have gone back and bought the whole back catalogue.

From its disturbing intro track that creates loads of atmosphere it moves on to funkier beats with 'Some Kind Of Kink' and gets dirty on 'The Rough And The Quick'.

I can't leave this alone...
