3.0 out of 5 stars not as good as the oulipo compendium 14 Mar 2001
If like me you must read everything that you can about the OULIPO, and you have to read it in english, curse my backward education, then you will want to get this book. It is somewhat more academic than the compendium, containing manifestos and longer learned papers than the compendium, it also contains an illuminating plagerism algorithm dreamt up by Harry Mathews also there is some good stuff about Queneau's conbinatoric plots.

Where the OULIPO compendium ed H Mathews, is capacious and joyous full of examples and potential this tome is slight and mildly interesting.

Tempted to learn French, but you're too lazy? Love the French and it's authors? Want to know more about what your pretentious friend gabbles on about, but were to afraid to ask? Well, here you go. Suffering from writers block, then pick an equation!

I recommend you buy Atlas Press masterwork the Oulipo Compendium at the same time, along with a couple of classic Oulipo novels like Life a Users Manual by Perec or If on a Winter's Day by Calvino. Poetry: The Plurality of Worlds of Lewis by Jacques Roubaud. Essay: Why I Have Not Written Any of My Books by Marcel Benabou. There, that should be enough for now... Now, go learn French (or at least try learning English better, Oulipo will teach you how little you know).

5.0 out of 5 stars OULIPO! 5 Jan 2012
This book is a comprehensive collection of all things Ou-Li-Po. i would recomend it to anyone who wants to dig a little deeper into the OULIPO "philosophy" and techniques.

I originally bought this to aid me in my University presentation, and it helped a great deal in clarifying it's distinction from other more generalized areas of constrained writing (because all writing is constrained in someway, whether delibratly or no) my presentation and knowledge was only enhanced by the use of this book. some of it is playfull and some technical, but always informative and enlightening. the book is well-bound, the paper is top quality and there are to my knowlegde no typographic errors, which is in keeping with oulipo's very keen attention to detail.
