Comprising over 150 quoted passages from 500 years of disciplinary writing! The extracts are of all lengths, from single paragraphs to several pages, and of all types. Every possible disciplinary configuration is represented with no overall gender preference. Many passages are moving, others humorous, a few are shocking, and a great many are exciting! The book is laid out with five chapters, each corresponding to a particular era in history. In the first half, the birch rod enjoys almost universal employment, but by the dawn of the twentieth century it is fast falling into eclipse and being replaced by the cane and strap. Although containing some passages that CP fans will be familiar with, the book also features items which have been translated from both French and German literature for the very first time and specifically for use in this book.
