This is just how I remember hearing Johnny Clarke live: raw, rude and raucous! The feel of the venue is all there, his words virtually obscured at times by the hecklers, which adds verité but sadly detracts from the home listening experience. Most of the disc is unaccompanied Clarke, although there a couple of tracks with instrumentation by a group who appear to be called The Prime Time Suckers. The cd comprises a set of Clarke's earliest rehearsal tapes and live recordings, and was originally his first vinyl lp, released in 1978. Some of these poems found their way onto later releases, in tidied-up, studio versions. If you're familiar with the "gruff northern poet", please add this to your collection; if you're not, however, I suggest you start with one of his more 'accessible' releases, such as "Snap Crackle & Bop", "Zip Style Method", or "Me And My Big Mouth" (the latter two rather difficult to obtain nowadays). Certainly don't judge him till you've heard the tracks 'Beasley Street', '36 Hours', 'I Wanna Be Yours', 'Valley of the long lost women', and 'Majorca'. Don't judge him on this cd alone. Enjoy it - I did!

Our Best Poet 30 May 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Not the best album by the one of the best poets in the world. Probably for diehards only, is there anyother kind of JCC fan?
