Otto Baumberger (1889 -1961) wurde als einer der ersten Schweizer der Berufsbezeichnung "Plakatgestalter" gerecht. Sein Wunsch, auch als KA1/4nstler zu Ehren zu kommen, blieb hingegen unerfA1/4llt. FrA1/4h eignete er sich als Angestellter der Wolfensberger AG in ZA1/4rich fundierte Kenntnisse der lithografischen Technik an. Er gestaltete A1/4ber 200 Plakate, mit denen er die Erneuerung des Mediums vorantrieb. Indem Baumberger wesentliche Aspekte der KonsumgA1/4ter-Werbung erkannte, war er seiner Zeit weit voraus. Ohne einen eigentlichen Stil zu prAgen, suchte er nach der jeweils adAquatesten LAsung fA1/4r die Aoebermittlung einer Botschaft. Seine originellen Bildfindungen fA1/4hrten dabei zu einer bis zur Abstraktion reichenden Reduktion, wobei Bild- und Schriftelemente eine immer prAgnantere Synthese eingingen. In seiner Vielfalt verkArpert Baumbergers Werk mithin exemplarisch die schweizerische Plakatgeschichte der ersten HAlfte des 20.Jahrhunderts mit ihrer Entwicklung vom malerischen KA1/4nstlerplakat zum grafisch geprAgten Corporate Design.

Decent overview of Baumberger in terms of the actual images of his work, which are decently printed. The text translated from the original German isn't very good, and I think could have been better researched and detailed, however does serve to give a reasonable narrative introduction to this important Swiss poster artist. Baumberger deserves a more in-depth study with regards to his body of work.
