Product Description

Otovent opens the eustachian tube and allows the fluid that has collected in the middle ear to drain naturally down the back of the throat. The Otovent procedure can be performed at home under the supervision of parents. The treatment takes only a matter of seconds to perform, and is painless. Otovent should be used 2-3 times daily for a period of 2-3 weeks. Otovent balloons should be changed every 3 days. After the full 2-3 weeks treatment, progress should be evaluated by your doctor. All ENT doctors would recommend that your child undergoes a "watchful waiting" period during which it is possible that his or her condition may improve spontaneously. However, during this "waiting" period further disruption can occur to a child's learning if hearing is impaired. In the interim, the Otovent treatment can supply your child with a temporary solution to the condition. Otovent may provide the only treatment your child will need to alleviate the symptoms of Glue Ear. Otovent should not be using during a cold, ear or throat infection. If in doubt please consult your doctor. Benefits include: * High compliance * Visually verifiable compliance * Painless * Frequent, regular treatments * Effective without drugs * May avoid / delay surgery * Low treatment costs * No known side-effects * Early, satisfying results

5.0 out of 5 stars Alternative to grommets 19 Nov 2012

My wife and I cannot recommend this product highly enough.
I realise this is a rambling review but I suspect many a parent will be in this position, so I thought it ok to post the long version in order to identify with our situation.

Our normally well behaved six year old son started misbehaving in class at School. This got steadily worse, so much so that we even checked his hairline at the back of his neck for treble sixes. Luckily we didn't find any.
We booked a hearing test for him and the results showed that he had only forty per cent hearing capacity. The right ear was full of fluid and the left one was almost the same. Coupled with this, he had an accumulation of wax in both ears. Both of these ailments, according to the specialist, was very likely the cause of his behavioural change.

We came away from the clinic with a prescription for antibiotics to clear the fluid and some Bicarbonate drops to soften the wax. Some weeks later when both had been finished we noticed a slight improvement with his hearing but his behaviour quickly returned to pre medication stage. So much so that my wife was regularly asked to `Step into the office' of either the Teacher or Head Teacher when picking him after School. Our normally well behaved son was constantly on the report card, being told off or sent out of class during lessons.

A few days later we took him back to the Doctors and he prescribed more antibiotics and drops. My wife asked if there was anything else we could try as she was reluctant to pump a six year old full of drugs. She was offered micro suction for him on both ears which she readily accepted and an appointment was given.

At the clinic the following week, every other child merrily went in and out of the surgery room and had suction.

5.0 out of 5 stars It works! 17 Mar 2010
By Travelo
I have had glue ear, and associated problems when flying, for many years. The last major bout was two years ago. Nothing that the ENT specialists at the hospital (steroid nose sprays, antihistamines etc)suggested helped but eventually after several months, and while on the waiting list for grommets, the ears cleared on their own.

Two months ago the problem returned and I was almost completely deaf in my right ear. After reading an article in a national newpaper about Otovent being useful for pain on descent in aircrafts, I read about the product online and decided to give it a go to see if it would shift the glue ear.

The balloon was initially difficult to inflate and I could imagine that it might be tricky for a child. On first use I could feel crackling in the deaf ear. Each consecutive use made the ear pop a bit more and hearing started to return. I then tried the technique (tricky at first) of swallowing once the balloon is inflated. This produced an immediate result and the ear started popping. It is now five days after the first use and my ear is completely clear. It is brilliant! I can't recommend this product enough and can't understand why it isn't prescribed by health professionals.

5.0 out of 5 stars It worked for me 19 Feb 2010

I'm adult and commonly get glue ear in my right ear after a bad cold. This time around it was the worst I had ever experienced... around 70% reduction in hearing and a deeply distracting sensation. As I had no infection in the ear and because I don't like to feel I am wasting my doctor's time, I thought I would give this a go. One box (of 5 balloons) is designed to provide treatment for between 2 and 3 weeks. After one week of following the procedure I was beginning to lose faith but then, whilst blowing up the balloon in the usual way, I felt/heard a distinct/loud sensation within my ear (which I can only guess was the beginning of air getting in and fluid getting out), one day after which my symptoms all but disappeared and hearing returned to normal. If you are thinking of trying this for your child you might prefer to go through your doctor to get it, but for the chance to avoid bothering your GP and/or going down the route of more invasive interventions (and the very minor extra cost over a prescription charge) I would highly recommend this product.

I tried the Otovent kit yesterday after six frustrating weeks with a blocked middle right ear (glue ear) that wasn't getting any better.

Throughout this time my right ear had felt stuffed up and my hearing was impaired. I was told the ear wasn't infected, that it should just clear of its own accord... eventually. Over the weeks I'd tried Beconase, Sudafed, the Valsalva manoeuvre (trying to forcibly exhale while keeping the mouth and nose closed), drinking lots of water, Ibuprofen, steaming with my head over a bowl, hot showers - the lot. Everything I'd seen recommended on the Internet, I tried. Repeatedly. Nothing worked. What was extra frustrating was that sometimes I thought the ear was improving, but then it would worsen again.

Anyway, I tried Octovent yesterday and hey presto - instant progress! The thing works. I found it much more powerful and effective than the Valsalva manoeuvre. The right ear responded to the technique immediately, with popping and other internal sensations and a 90% improvement in the stuffed up, internal pressure feeling. I used it once more last night before bed and have used it twice so far today (they recommend you use it three times a day for 2-3 weeks) and my ear (and hearing) is already spectacularly better.

I'm impressed. However, I'm only giving Otovent four stars because the written instructions, although not bad, could be better. I'm offering two tips from my experience that I think the manufacturer should include on the sheet:

TIP #1 - I've seen one star reviews here from users complaining they couldn't inflate the balloon. Well I couldn't either the first time I tried it and it seemed impossible. But the point is: don't worry about it.
