Book Description

4 Nov 2004

My Old Man's name was Jack Daniels Crenshaw. No surprise what he liked to drink. As a very small child I remember teething - cryin' out savagely for relief. Eventually he would appear over my crib and rub Jack Daniels on his gums until he fell asleep.'

Married six times, all to women named Brenda, Otis Lee Crenshaw's bourbon-fuelled odyssey takes him from the high mountains of East Tennessee to the bottom of the music charts. A man not above faking his own death to sell more records, this is his not quite true story of romance, recidivism, country music, and an unshakeable belief in Marriage at First Sight.

PRAISE FOR OTIS LEE CRENSHAW:

'Excruciatingly funny' Guardian

'An inspired comic creation ... unmissable' Independent

Review

Hall uses his creation to explore the US of trailer parks, petty crime, insane money-making notions and harsh class divisions. He's pretty darn funny about it too . . . this is an intelligent and inspired book (MORNING STAR )

As funny as his hilarious stand-up. (ZOO )

Like reading a transcript of The Jerry Springer Show- hilarious. (ICE MAGAZINE )

As happy conforming to white trash cliches as he is subverting them, Perrier award winner Hall has proved his pen is just as sharp as his mouth. (BIG ISSUE )

5.0 out of 5 stars Tennessee Trailer Trash at it's best 20 Jan 2005
Format:Paperback
Rich Hall is a comedy genius, and writing in the guise of Otis Lee Crenshaw, he writes an incredubly funny, almost heart-warming autobiography of sorts.
It covers his time in prison, his wives (all 6 Brenda's) and includes some hilarious transcripts of court proceedings.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Otis Lee Crenshaw, or just Rich Hall in general.

Apparently Otis is a long-running character of Rich Hall's, but not knowing that didn't stop me enjoying this book from start to finish. Nor did knowing nothing about Tennessee, trailer parks, country and western, prison - any of the subjects in the book. Otis Lee Crenshaw told me all I needed to know, and made me laugh out loud right through the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent little book 18 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
Actually one of the funniest books I have ever read...laughed out loud many times. Its worth reading for the court case transcripts alone. Ironically not a huge fan of Country and Western music, but would have to say Otis Lee Crenshaw is now my favourite C&W song writer. Not a word I like to throw out too much, but Rich Hall is a 'genius' of comedy writing, I have to admit. I will be reading more of his books for sure.
