5.0 out of 5 stars I admit I'm not quite done either.., 26 Dec 1997
By A Customer
I first bought the book for a friend as a Christmas present. It tok me an hour to wrap the stupid thing because I *really* wanted it for myself. I finally wrapped it and promised myself that I would buy myself a copy after Christmas.

So I went to school and gave it to my friend, who was so happy to get the book she wanted! I then sat dejected and sullen while she smiled over her new book. Then another friend showed up and stopped right in her tracks and pointed at the book, thinking it was mine. Then I got my present, it was the book! Yeah!

I think it's a great book, nice and complicated just how I like it. I cannot predict anything, and I would still be reading it now if I could find it! I'm only halfway through and I want to know what happens at the very end. At first I was expecting a slow beginning like that of Memory, Sorrow and Thorn, though I know it did get better.

The only bad part about this series it the wait between books. Just look at the bright side, at least Williams isn't Jordan who takes almost two years between books. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly fanastic story - in fact more of an epic!, 27 Aug 1999
By A Customer
I didn't realise how immersed I was going to become in this book when I first bought it! This book has a very strong storyline but also a wealth of detail which means you can really imagine that Earth could become like this in X years. For Tad Williams to think up this story is already impressive but to hold together this much detail and storyline threads is a real feat! And the author doesn't make the mistake of including too much technical detail which I sometimes can't perfectly follow. Having read both this and its sequel "River of Blue Fire" I can't wait for "Mountain of Black Glass" to be published. Tad Williams fantasy quartet 'Memory, sorrow & thorn" was excellent and this future science fiction quartet will be its equal at least!

5.0 out of 5 stars Snow Crash look out!, 21 Aug 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Otherland: City of Golden Shadow (Mass Market Paperback)
You will try to take your bleary eyes away from this book more than once, hoping for sleep to give you the rest you need to continue. This book cannot be read in one day...the huge tome takes several. As you become immersed in the characters who, in turn, explore virtual reality of which we can only dream, your own world will seem a pale shadow and you will hunger to read more. This step into science fiction takes the science fact of artificial life and examines the implications of awesome computing power and terrabyte bandwidth. Follow a young South African woman and her Bushman student as they try to find the cabal that has pushed her brother into a coma. For conspiracy lovers, sci-fi freaks, and techno-geeks, this book wraps drama and character development in rich technology. As a precaution, I suggest you turn to pages 300 and 600 upon purchase of the book and put notes to yourself to eat, drink, and, please, shower. Forget sleep.
