As the first book in a growing series, Otherland 1 : City of Golden Shadow devotes a large proportion of the story to introducing and developing characters. This sometimes seems heavy going, but as the story evolves this pays off, as the reader already knows how each of the main characters will react to each of the increasingly strange enviroments they find themselves in, and why they are there in the first place. Using the endless posibility of virtual reality Thad Williams leads the characters through strange and wonderfull worlds, from WW1 trenches, to the canals of Mars. At the same time, the richest men in the world are using it for a far more sinister, but as yet unknown purpose. What that has to do with children on the network slipping into comas all around the world, is part of the mystery, as is the world wide success of Uncle Gingle, a horrific clown. Think that's strange? don't worry, as the book flows, stranger and stranger situations seem quite believable. You will quite readily accept a baboon as a leading character, heading towards a battle with an Egyptian God! At times there seem to be a dozen different plots weaving their way through the book, briefly interacting, then going their own seperate ways, leaving the reader wondering what could possibly happen next, but no matter how strange it becomes, you are sucked into this strange world, and it all becomes believable. Having read this book, I had to pick up Vol 2, which continues this excellent science fiction masterpiece.
