From the Author

What I was trying to do in OTHER WOMEN
OTHER WOMEN represents my attempt to come to terms with the violence in our world, both personal and global, via my main character Caroline Kelley, an emergency room nurse. In despair over the horror she sees all around her, she goes into therapy. Her interactions in that small room over several months challenge and change both her and the therapist, an older woman who has shut down emotionally in response to her own earlier experience of pain and loss. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

One of the best books I have read in a while. I just couldn't put it down until I had finished it, and then I was sad that it was over. This book has everything: Humor, compassion, wisdom, insight, and great characters. It makes you think deeply about your own life and your relationships. The slow transformation of the main character Caroline is fascinating as she goes through therapy and takes a critical look at herself and her past. I have bought copies for all my friends to read and they all liked it just as much. If you tend to get depressed during the winter months, read this book as it may not only cheer you up but may also give you a fresh new perspective on your life.

Every time I return to this book (and I can tell you there have been many times since I first picked it up 13 years ago and didn't put it down until I'd finished it) it's like spending time with a very caring parent. The main characters are not victims, just people trying to make sense of the chaos around them. It's a positive and up-lifting book. I think I'll just go and collect it from my shelf for another read!!

This is the first book by Alther I 've read, and I'm glad I did!! Excellent! A challenging topic, a mature work of art. I'd also recommend "5 Minutes in Heaven" to L. Alther's fans.
