Book Description

8 Feb 2006 0752865021 978-0752865027 New Ed
Ever since the death of her husband Theo, Jane Fielding has tried to keep Rawlston House for herself and her children, despite the money problems she inherited. Selling off bits of the property has helped: there are new people next door, and in the lodge on the lane. But just when it seems her head is finally above water, Jane is beset with new anxieties. Sam Clarke has groomed her home with the same style and polish she applies to herself. She adores her husband, Ben, and the life he gives her, but struggles with being a stepmother to his daughter. Marooned in the countryside, far from her family and friends, she soon becomes aware that Ben's life is more of a mystery to her than she realised... It was never Bella Balfour's dream to live in the country and when her husband Iain insists they move to a tiny hamlet, miles from anywhere, it's a shock after her busy London life. The cracks in her marriage are turning into unbridgeable chasms, and Bella is hungry to find the passion for life she feels she has lost. Each woman is drawn inexorably into the lives of the others, whether she likes it or not...

4.0 out of 5 stars A GOOD READ 27 Feb 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is a well written story which could apply to any one of us. Sadly this author does not appear to have written any more books. This book was written a few years ago but the plot is applicable to any time and the characters are identifiable to us all. I enjoyed this book and feel so sorry I cannot seek Kirsty Crawford's work out in future.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved it 9 Feb 2006
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I think the reason this book's such a great read is that it's really honest about love and marriage - how messy and complicated it all is! It all seems very very real, and very hard to put down - like reading three women's diaries. It's Joanna Trollope meets Footballers Wives meets Madame Bovary - who knew they'd mix so well?!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Idle hands 31 Aug 2007
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Don't be fooled by the chick-lit style cover to the 2006 paperback edition (i.e. pale turquoise background, pink lettering, legs, stilettos ...) for this is a novel which goes far deeper into social status and emotions than your average chick lit novel. It is the story of three women - Jane, propery wealthy/cash poor; Sam, nouveau riche; and Bella, simply just poor) and how their lives connect in a country village and with time on their hands. An excellent, page-turning read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Totally gripped! 1 Feb 2006
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
I really enjoyed this book – it gripped me right from the start and pulled me into the story. In fact, I stayed up till 2am to finish it because I had to find out what happened! All the characters were very real and I could sympathise with all of them, even the wicked one. A satisfying, intelligent read with lots of punch for anyone who enjoys a good story.

I absolutely loved this book, it's such an absorbing tale and very fluent and easy-to-read. Look out for the loathsome husband Ian and enjoy!
