The Orwells come from Chicago in the Mid West and produce high octane garage punk which owes a debt to Iggy and the Stooges and the Rolling Stones albeit played at the wrong speed. The band are essentially a bunch of bratty gangly youth with an average age of 18 who ooze potential and who have listened very carefully to their parents records from the sixties and learned some good lessons. They are steered by the steady guiding hand of the always interesting Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio whose production ethic is underpinned by the good sense not to polish or embellish the bands sound. This short EP is therefore exemplary in its economical rock values. As a result this EP includes two versions of the song "Other voices". The one has slighty more polish produced by Sitek but another equally fine which is much more rough and ready. Whichever version you choose it is a caustic blast of garage rock which eventually wears down your resistance until you are singing at the top of your range like some mad fool. The power of the band live is captured by the last song "Mailrats" which thrashes along with enough energy to power a a small city. More psychedelic themes are pursued on the bruising "Head" which show that the band have more than three chords up their sleeves while the glorious pop of "Blood bubbles" have you longing for a full albums worth of material. "Other voices" by the excellent Orwells is a rough and ready starting manifesto but sustains your interest and does enough to remind you of that spark that once ignited the Strokes but which is now sadly extinguished .

Oddly reminds me of the Mammas & Pappas stuff....
Not a bad thing, drifts a bit on a slow tempo but has a catchy chorus.
Different!
