I had read some of these stories a long time ago and have now enjoyed every bit of this bargain-priced re-read.
Anyone who is interested in any sort of writing should read WSM short stories, and then compare the rest. As well as the writing and the characters, I love his evocation of colonial times in the far east. Great escapism from our 21st century.

I have decided to re-read or read for the first time the works of W. Somerset Maugham. He is one of the greatest writers in the english language of all time. I have started with 'Rain and Other South Sea Stories'. This book is a copy of Maugham's first book of short stories first published in 1921. So now they historical. They explore life in the islands of the south seas as well as in europe and america and describe the different life styles in the different parts of the world before airline travel which has made the world so much smaller. Long stories, short stores, Maugham is a master of his craft and an amazing observer of human behaviour. He seems to be outside life looking in. My favorites in this collection are The Fall of Edward Barnard - a very long story, and Red, a short story with a twist in the tale. I am looking forward to reading more short stories and many novels over the next couple of years, and fortunately it is possible to buy them in nice new clean paperbacks.

As I bought this book as a gift, I'm not able to write a review. However, I have read it in the past and know that it is well-written, as are all Somerset Maugham's books. It's a great pity that his works are no longer popular, as he was a master of providing insights into human nature that have seldom been equalled.
