I bought this book to read on holiday but I couldn't resist just taking a peek, maybe trying a page or two so I wouldn't be coming to it 'cold' during my break. That was a fatal mistake; I couldn't put it down till I'd found out what happened. Work didn't get worked, washing went unwashed, shopping unshopped. It's a fabulous, glorious, book. Full of warmth, humour, emotional insight and brilliant observations.
The story centres on three main characters whose lives intertwine throughout the book. There's Jojo, the tough cookie New Yorker literary agent; Lily the sweet-natured writer who's suddenly propelled to bestsellerdom but who's happiness is tempered by dreadful guilt because she 'stole' best friend Gemma's boyfriend, Anton, and Gemma, who's father has just left her mother as the book opens. This allows us to pick which heroine we like best and who's story we care about most. I expected to like Gemma most because I too once had a boyfriend 'stolen' from me. Or maybe Jojo because I wish I could be as successful and driven as her. But, no; for me it was the fragile, vulnerable, Lily whose storyline engaged me most and whose story made me cry involuntarily as I rushed to read the conclusion.
This was my first Marian Keyes book and I can't wait to devour the rest. Marian totally deserves her crown of Chick Lit Queen.

Having previously read all of Keyes' other books (Rachel's Holiday, Sushi for Beginners, Watermelon etc) I was looking forward to reading this new offering and I was not disappointed. The story is set in the world of publishing and is told from the viewpoints of the three main characters. First there is Gemma, a Dublin-based party planner whose father has just walked out on her mother. Left to pick up the pieces she decides to write a novel on the subject. By doing this she hopes to upstage Lily, the girl who stole Gemma's one true love and has just published her own successful book. Gemma plans to send her book to JoJo, Lily's agent who is having an affair with her boss. The three stories come together brilliantly in what I found to be a hilarious and enjoyable book.

I had heard of Marian Keyes but thought that her books would be pretty average. How wrong could I be? I picked this up at a train station for a holiday, whilst away I didn't have a chance to read it and I was extremely glad I didn't as my boyfriend would have be ignored for the entire holiday! It usually takes me a month or so to read most books but it was so compelling, funny, witty and engrossing that I read it in 3 days. I totally related to all the characters and now that I've finished it I am longing to read more about the lives of Gemma, Jojo and Lily. Marian I hope you are reading your reviews because you have inspired me to write again and given a great insight into the world of literary agents and publishing. I have now ordered every other book written by Marian and I hope that they all live up to this one and Amazon take note you really should do a box set of her books at a reasonable price.
