Product Description

From the bestselling author of The Kashmir Shawl. Available on ebook for the first time.

They were 'the five families' – the pleasant hospitable Frosts, the brash and sexy Cleggs, flirtatious Jimmy Rose and aloof Star, maternal Vicky and reliable Gordon Ransome, Michael Wickham and his perfect wife Marcelle. Old friends, their lives are interwoven in a comfortable pattern of school runs and Sunday golf, barbecues and shared holidays.

Until Nina Cort returns to the cathedral city of her childhood. Rich sophisticated and newly widowed, Nina is an exotic thread in the pattern, whose intrusion reveals a web of hidden flaws.

In the course of a year from which none will emerge unscathed, the five families and Nina discover that you can never truly know the fabric of other people's marriages. Perhaps not even of your own…

2.0 out of 5 stars Not her usual standard 28 Sep 2014

I was disappointed by this book after reading several others by Rosie Thomas which were well written and constructed. This is chick lit of the most ordinary kind, inward looking and repetitive with barely credible characters and a convoluted 'plot'. I would have rated it fewer stars but for the occasional passages of the writing I enjoyed in titles such as The Kashmir Shawl.

2.0 out of 5 stars disappointing 10 July 2014

I have enjoyed other works by this author but this was disappointing. Her ability to tell a story and to create interesting characters is still evident but I found the plot rather implausible; how the arrival of one woman into a social circle could have been the catalyst for so much mayhem was just too much for me to accept.

5.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this book 23 July 2014

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were very real. It was interesting that the main character was the other woman, and very honest in the way that non of the characters were good or bad, just human, which was very moving.

Wonderful book. It really draws you in to the characters and the story. Wish Rosie would write a sequel. Love it.

My wife thoroughly enjoyed this book. One of those "can't put it down books". Rosie Thomas is new to her but will certainly be reading more. Has recently read "The Kashmir Shawl" in reading group and would recommend both.
