So what was it all about then? I can't make any sense at all out of the ending. Is it all supposed to end mysteriously? Are we supposed to draw our own conclusions? The first couple of chapters are a bit of an adventure, the long middle bit seems to be saying the same thing over and over again when the reader is supposed to make sense out of Mary making sense of the world and her past, and the ending is quite a puzzle to me - there could be any number of explanations. This is my first Amis and I thought it was very bleak and very enigmatic. It was quite an interesting journey, but something you need to think about a bit.

What? 4 Jun 2006
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is the frist of his book that I have read and although it was very different to the type of book I normally read, I found myself throughly enjoyig it, and carried on that way until the last pages. It seemed to end very ubruptly and I was left not realy knowing what had happened.

This was a book I picked up to read one night while I was working just to fill some time. I had no previous experience of Martin Amis work before and I can honestly say I will be looking to read more! By the end of the first chapter I couldn't put the book down it was too intrigueing. Mary's discovery of herself after suffering amnesia, is at first a downward spiral into a sad lonely world, she is in suspicion of herself and the past which is hidden to her. The story takes us through many aspects of life and how it can degenerate. Mary in her amnesiac naivety, easily steps into this world and lets it conssume her. An intense book that leaves u wanting more!

Journey of a lost soul

A poor showing from a great author.
Hmmmm, not quite sure what to make of this one. I'm a confirmed Amis fan and have read most (though not all) of his work. This one really left me flat. Read more

A great book, but a depressing story.
This is one of the few books that I have read from start to finish whilst on one long journey. This is a testament to the transfixing story line that is pursued through out this... Read more

Compact & Contained - A Cracking Read!
I have found the later Amis work ('Money', 'London Fields' etc) to be rather laboured - excellent character studies but they drag. Read more

A really really good book
Other people - they're just everywhere aren't they - and that is just the point of this fantastic book - not Amis' best but a corker none the less. Do not hesitate. Read more
