As a trumpet player and admirer of Kenny's music and playing for 20 years,this is another remarkable achievement of a player who belies his 78 years. This is his first recording with a string quartet,and is truly beautiful.
It has all the hallmarks of Wheeler's conception: a beautiful sound, full of emotion and genuine feeling, (I take strong issue with one newspaper critic's review of his sound as "querelous"-which means 'complaining'-you try playing the trumpet at that age, at that standard!!),great melodies and rich harmonies, that as a fellow musician, are a joy to play on,though they are challenging!The string writing is much more than a "blanket"for the lead soloists to "blow" over, and is an integral part of the compositions as a whole.
As fellow musicians know, Kenny is always very generous to his compatriots,both in performance and in the studio.There are two tracks which neither Kenny or frequent collaborator,pianist John Taylor, play on,one lasting almost 14 minutes.The recording of the strings is second to none and shows his compositional style in an entirely new light, though to old fans,still recogniseable.
Kenny Wheeler, apart from being a very fine player technically of course, is a player of total integrity and honesty,incredibly modest and humble and always keen to champion others.
I have lost count the number of times I have seen him play live. I always feel it is something really special and a source of joy. The affection that is widely felt for him amongst fellow musicians is more than deserved.After playing at the top for 40 years,I look forward to the next album!

Very short, I find "other people" the most sublime jazz recording I ever heard! The quality of the musicians Kenny Wheeler and John Taylor and the combination with Hugo Wolf String Quartet is sublime. Very very recommendable.
