I picked up this book purely by chance, as I must admit it is not usually a subject matter or genre that would necessarily appeal to me. However from the the first few pages I was hooked. I thought it was beautifully and poignantly written - one of those books where you just re-read certain paragraphs and sentences because they were so moving. It deals with a difficult subject - infant death, but is ultimately uplifting and satisfying. She is an author I will definitely be reading again!

A very moving account of a young woman's tentative and precarious relationship with her young stepson; made more difficult by the loss of her own newly born baby. It is insightful and understanding of fallible human beings; beautifully and sensitively written,combining poignancy with humour. I laughed and cried throughout.
Every stepparent or prospective stepparent would gain from reading it.

I read this one wondering if I would enjoy it or not. I wound up falling in love. The lead character is a woman living with her husband and, occasionally, his son (her stepson). Her life is complicated by the face that she and her husband lost their own baby just after its arrival, and she hasn't recovered from the grief (can anyone recover from the loss of their child?) As a stepmum mmyself, I recognised some of the uncomfortable and embarrassing feelings that one has, feelings that Waldman is brutally honest about in a way that's inspiring. The raw undercurrent in this book - of trying to be the right person, of trying to have a relationship with a boy that you don't know and maybe wouldn't have wanted to, all while recovering from the loss of your own child - is something you cannot take yourself away from. A brilliant novel in every heartbreaking sense of the word.
