Product Description

Performed for the first time at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, with its racing concentrated plot and intense dramatic detail, Othello is one of Shakespeare s most exciting, atmospheric and heartbreaking plays. This is a tale of uncontrollable jealousy, deception and murder driven by one of theatre s greatest villains.

Review

'Full of pace and energy... Eamonn Walker brings to Othello dignity, grace and a fine sense of the contradiction that leads Othello to lament "the pity of it" even as he prepares to murder Desdemona' --The Guardian

'Walker cuts a charismatic and brooding figure. He charts the hero's descent into murderous jealousy with a vivid physicality... Zoe Tapper (Desdemona) is enchanting' --The Independent

'Desdemona is perfection - the best I have ever seen.. Tim McInnerny has been brilliantly cast as Iago. --Observer

5.0 out of 5 stars Very worthwhile performance 9 April 2010
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have just received this DVD, and I feel compelled to challenge the only other review here, which is extremely negative. Maybe he and his students went to see a live performance on a bad day, but the performance captured on the DVD is admirable in every respect. I usually object to Shakespeare DVDs without subtitles, but in this case it truly wasn't necessary, because the actors speak extremely clearly and the sound quality is excellent. In a live performance actors *have* to speak very loudly in order for all of the audience to be able to hear them. That they accomplish this is entirely to their credit.

I find no fault with any of the actors (and I particularly enjoyed Zoë Tapper). This is exactly how a live stage version is supposed to be. Okay, so it's not Branagh, but I found Tim McInnerny's Iago perfectly absorbing throughout, and I totally recommend this DVD to anybody with more than a passing interest in this play or in Shakespeare generally.

3.0 out of 5 stars An adequate DVD for an adequate performance 16 Mar 2013
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've only seen a handful of Shakespeare's plays so far and this is the first one I watched on DVD, so perhaps I am not the best person to judge this. However, I couldn't help but feel a little bit disappointed with this. At times, it looked as if characters were just shouting the words at each other. Don't get me wrong, this is far from an awful production. All the actors do an adequate job at the very least. Even when they're shouting, it's never awkward. However, it didn't seem to be the most inspired of productions either. This is the first time I've had the thought (on several occasions) that some scenes had looked or sounded better in my head.

Part of that might have something to do with the translation to video. Quite often, characters are just about in view, microphones didn't always record everyone's voice clearly and the editing was distracting at times. I suspect because the editor had to cut to whatever shot was available. Again, never is any of it truly awful, but it dabbles in adequacy more than anything else.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great performance 18 Nov 2012

I have seen many performances, this was definitely one of the best, Eamonn Walker & Tim McInnery were great and the first review is unfair. Perhaps we're supposed to be impressed by it?
