If you are a fan of bands such as Finntroll, Korpiklaani or Suidakra then I can very much recommend Arkona. It is in essence a death metal album with heavy folk influences, but, ultimately it is still death metal. So, if you are not a fan of heavy growling vocals then I would direct you away from this band and would recommend more accessible ones such as In Extremo.
However, if you are (like me) a fan of death metal then this album will be a welcome addition to your collection. Firstly, Arkona sing in Russian, which for me is a massive plus point. For an ignoramus like me who doesn't speak Russian it only adds further depth to the fantastical side of their music (much like Finntroll singing in Finnish adds a certain extra troll-iness to their work). Secondly, the vocalist is female, although you wouldn't know it to listen to her scream, howl and growl her way through the tracks like an angry banshee who has just found out the lottery numbers he forgot to put on just came up in the midweek draw. It is impressively constructed and beautifully crafted music which focuses heavily on Slavic folklore and mythology.
The album is also an impressive 60 or so minutes in length which means your getting a lot for your money plus some beautiful artwork designed by Kris Verwimp (the man behind the equally brilliant Manegarm album artwork).
Overall I highly recommend it. If, however, you like your metal softer and your folk music a little folkier then I would steer clear if I were you. Great work Arkona!!
