Perfection or as near as you can get,
By
This review is from: Oscar Peterson Plays The Cole Porter Songbook (Audio CD)
This is perfection or as near as you can get to it without becoming blasphemous. Just get this CD is my advice.
I bought a previous release of this CD back in the 80ies. Indeed, the 80ies although this release seems to be from 7 July 1997. I checked the table of contents and I have listened to a few audio previews and it is the same CD as I'm referring to. And very fortunately too that it is the same CD! It is right up there with the a hand full of CDs I listen to frequently and which never get boring. Want two other CDs that never tire? Try The Legacy Vol.1 or New Weave. The latter really should be reissued.

Peterson plays Cole Porter,
By
This review is from: Oscar Peterson Plays The Cole Porter Songbook (Audio CD)
When I first looked at this CD in the store I didn't listen to any audio preview, I was sure it was a great album. My opinion was confirmed the first time I listened to it, the album opens with a superb performance of the famous "In the still of the night" and lets you start this wonderful journey. I suggest you to purchase this amazing CD and listen to 45 mins of good music!

Oscar Peterson's Trio Performance:One of the Best.,
By Jack Metzger - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Oscar Peterson Plays The Cole Porter Songbook (Audio CD)
This re-release by Verve preserves, in my opinion, one of the best trio performances. 'In the Still of the Night', Peterson's subtle single melody nuances and left hand chords are complimented by Ray Brown's wonderful bass. Ed Thigpen maintains the tempo with his stylish brush technique. The rest of the CD is hampered only slightly by the 'volme' inconsistencies from one number to the next, created by the studio. This is a great CD. 19 of 19 people found the following review helpful:

BUY IT EYES CLOSED,

OSCAR PETERSON's 1959 piano tribute to COLE PORTER is a joy even if it's only 33 minutes long.We could have take an another half hour of this music. What makes it so enjoyable is the variety of moods it delivers. There was actually another PORTER songbook recorded in mono, but for a reason i ignore, they did not coupled it with this one to make it last longer.A message to VERVE:did they lost the masters of the RICHARD RODGERS songbook, and if not, what are they waiting for?

Every time I play this CD people ask about it. I have never seen something so universally loved. It creates and sustains a lazy summer afternoon mood like no other.
