Book Description

21 Mar 2009
At age 100, Oscar Niemeyer is universally acknowledged as a master of form, color, and light--the last living Modern master. Niemeyer is known primarily for his large-scale institutional and civic designs throughout Brazil and Europe--daringly conceptual works that challenged twentieth-century orthodoxy about Modernism, materials, and structure. This comprehensive book, a companion to Rizzoli's Oscar Niemeyer Houses, presents a reevaluation of his greatest buildings, in all new color photography specially commissioned for this book. Featured are the architect's most seminal work, including: Ministry of Education and Health, Rio de Janeiro; Brasilia; New Pampulha Yacht Club, Belo Horizonte, Brazil; Mondadori Headquarters, Milan; Le Havre Central Cultural Center, France; Niteroi Museum of Contemporary Art, Brazil; and the Oscar Niemeyer Museum. A periodic resident of Rio de Janeiro, photographer Alan Weintraub has been granted unprecedented access to these remarkable structures--from Brazil to North Africa to Italy. As a result, Oscar Niemeyer Buildings reveals the master's brilliant artistry, and his eloquent, sinuous, utterly livable Modernism.

4.0 out of 5 stars No Plans, but still nice 26 Aug 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I bought Oscar Niemeyer Houses which has lovely images and plans. I'm afraid this has only the images. I had to buy GG's mini mongraph to get the plans. But the images are really nice for the most part. There is a graininess to some of them though, but I cant tell if that is the Brazilian ambience or the photography! I do like this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing 24 Oct 2013

I love the works of Oscar Niemeyer. If you purchase this book please keep in mind that it only covers his work in Brazil and not world wide.
2.0 out of 5 stars Photography not up to par 8 Sep 2013
By Anthony Thompson - Published on
Weintraub is a widely published architectural photographer but frankly I'm not very impressed by the work in this book. Many of the images are mediocre at best; poorly cropped, composed or lit, etc. Check the images in the book preview and then do a Google image search for Oscar Niemeyer; you'll see for yourself that the Weintraub images are inferior to what is otherwise available.
5.0 out of 5 stars Oscar Niemeyer Buildings 30 May 2012
By Thomas L Rawdon - Published on
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Alan Weintraub and Alan Hess's, 11.5" x 11" coffee table book that chronicles in photo and text, the
magnificent architecture of Brazil's iconic architect, Oscar Niemeyer, is truly worth adding to any
home or library. A companion to Oscar Niemeyer Homes, Buildings, makes an impressive set that defines
20th, mid-century and contemporary architecture in Brazil. Not unlike Frank Lloyd Wright in America,
Le Corbuier, or Mies van der Rhohe in Europe, Oscar Niemeyer as the designer of Brasilia, and origin
of important architectural design and reference for Brazil.

Lavish photography by Weintraub, fills the book with color images of Niemeyer's buildings in photographic
representations that pull no punches regarding the condition and current use of the structures. As in Oscar
Niemeyer Homes, Building's photo images are documented with knowledgeable and descriptive text from Alan Hess.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beatiful creations over a long career 6 Sep 2009

Niemeyer's creations are beautiful, Hess's test is insightful and the photography does an excellent job of highlighting Niemeyer's work. If you like this book, buy the companion book "Oscar Niemeyer's Houses."
