Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Oscar Flies Into The Mountains is a gentle and accessible introduction to nature. The information on the CD-ROM is provided in a humorous way, and there is a good mix of familiar animals such as bears and cows as well as lesser-known members of the animal kingdom like wood grouse and whistling marmots. Once you've chosen your own rucksack you can join Oscar the balloonist as he flies high through the cold mountains.

Oscar's balloon is decorated with the four seasons of the year. If you click on the winter picture, you are quickly taken to a snowy landscape where the animals introduce themselves. A couple of eagles talk about the joys of flying and show you pictures of their newly hatched children.

The stag, Randolph the Red, talks in an upper-crust accent about his favourite does and admits to having several girlfriends. Unfortunately he knows that one day he will no longer be the leader. Depending where you click, he will talk proudly about his antlers or how his coat keeps him warm when it snows.

Each time you choose an animal, the screen goes dark and you are given a few verbal clues about what they are and where they live before they are revealed. The animals talk in a friendly, good-humoured way and provide a brief insight into their lives--where they live, what they like to eat, who they like and what makes them afraid. (Ages 4 to 8). --Justin Hunt

Manufacturer's Description
Oscar's showing off his lederhosen! In the Alps, Oscar learns why marmots whistle when in danger, why baby bears are the size of guinea pigs, why mountain goats like snowboarding, why eagles sometimes dive from the skies, why grouse don't fall out of trees when they are sleeping, plus many other curious things! Join Oscar, Balthasar and Carmela once more and set off on a high-altitude adventure to discover the flora and fauna in this wonderful mountainous landscape.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn all about mountain creatures and seasons, 19 Mar 2002
By William Roberts (Cumbria, England) - See all my reviews

My two kids, 7 & 4, loved the programme, and especially the bears, deer, eagles, marmottes (which are cute mountain rodents) and at the click of the mouse can explore their behaviours in the different mountain seasons. In winter the marmottes are asleep of course, and the rabbits take on their winter coats.

The programme works just as well in French and German as English.

Daniel, 4, now knows the difference betwen an Ibex and a Chamois, and the programme contains games to make the learning easy and fun. The animations are charming, and we also bought Oscar in the Countryside as well after this.

5.0 out of 5 stars multilingual, 6 Feb 2003
On each page you can hear a sentence in one language, then click on a different language and hear it repeated in the new language. I enjoyed refreshing my language skills and learnt more vocab.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fun!, 27 Feb 2009
By K. Eastoe (UK) - See all my reviews

I bought this for my daughter when she was 3 and although she enjoyed it she would not spend long on it. However, at 5,6 and now 8 years old she has revisited often and is on another phase of it now. It is very informative and is just up her street (she adores any animals). Away from the PC, she will often describe her surroundings and give me clues and ask me to guess the animal! She has also passed on lots of useful information that I did not even know so we have both benefitted from it.

The games are a little simple for her now but she still hasn't found all the ones hidden in the animals so is still enjoying the novelty of it. The eagles are of particular interest to her and she spends a great deal of time up in the hills.

The programme can be frustrating at times but I think it adds to the need to develop the enquiring mind rather than have it pointed out to her before she's really exhausted her own investigations.
