4.0 out of 5 stars Visually ravishing and a joy to watch. 26 May 2000
By Steve
Format:VHS Tape
Ralph Fiennes transforms himself utterly into the obsessive innocent, Oscar, in a quiet, powerful story of two very unlikely people of overwhelming passions who find their ideal counterpart in each other. Cate Blanchett is a bundle of spikey energy as Lucinda and the supporting cast all turn in excellent performances. The tension is inexorably built up towards a shattering climax, with a surprising twist in the unsentimental ending. The film is visually ravishing and a joy to watch throughout, scene after scene is breathtakingly beautiful. A stunning, epic conception from start to finish. Magnificent.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful film 18 Aug 2004
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
I just happened on this film late one night, when I couldn't sleep - and I was mesmerised. It is everything all the other reviewers have already said - a very good story, well-acted, beautifully shot, happy, sad - just brilliant. I have never really been a fan of Ralph Fiennes - but this film (and Eugene Onegin) made me re-think. I've been looking out for it again on the cable channels and I've been looking out for a copy in the usual retail outlets for ages - just didn't think to look on Amazon ! I don't often watch films more than once but this is one of the few exceptions ! Watch it !

5.0 out of 5 stars I took a chance and loved it!
I was recommended this film by Amazon and, after reading the customer reviews (backed by my enthusiasm for Fiennes as an actor), I bought it. I absolutely love this film! Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Bizarre tale with little merit.
A most confusing beginning and I had lost concentration after 30 minutes or so. My wife thought it may be better on a second reading so

to speak, and we continued... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars This is one of my favourite films.
Ralph Fiennes and Cate Blanchett are just fantastic together in this magical film of obsession, innocence og and Beauty - There are scenes in this film you will never forget, and... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I found it rather mundane and was disappointed. The colouring of Ralph Fiennes looked false and added a rather amateurish aspect to the production.

5.0 out of 5 stars DVD
Arrived on time, and in good condition. Its a hard DVD to find in the shops, so it was good to find it here.

3.0 out of 5 stars Oscar & Lucinda
Perhaps I wasn't in the right frame of mind. Found this very slow and really rather tedious. Good to look at but not much else.

3.0 out of 5 stars Oscar and Lucinda
Loved Ralph, loved Cate - they did very well in playing two crazy people. The photography was great but the story was, to me, rather slow moving and, I hate to say it boring. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars A strangely wonderful sort-of love story
Odd, unique, beautifully photographed character study/love story.

and one an emotionally... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not great, either.
The film was quite enjoyable, although I couldn't understand the need for the ending they had used, but the book was much better.

I haven't read the book, I just bought this on the strength of enthusiastic reviews, after some hesitation. Read more
